As mentioned in the May edition of the Pipe Line (note addition of Mill Hill) One not to be missed!! A visit to St.Annes Cathedral Leeds to play: The new organ in the Cathedral which is a large romantic style instrument by Johannes Klais Orgelbau of Bonn. And as a special bonus! I have managed to include the opportunity to play: The Organ in Mill Hill Chapel Mill Hill Chapel houses one of the finest organs in the city. Its pipework is housed in twin chambers, occupying each side of the chancel. Built by Messrs. Norman & Beard in 1910, it has been skilfully enhanced and enlarged, under the supervision of Mr Anthony Norcliffe, by the firm of J.M. Spink & Son, to produce a splendidly comprehensive instrument of 53 stops, well suited to producing the sound-colours, for any period of organ music appropriately and effectively. Mill Hill Chapel City Square Leeds, West Yorkshire LS1 5EB We will assemble at the Mill Hill chapel at 11.30am ( entrance will be by the small back door next to the plaque that says “Priestly Hall” not the west end door) We leave the chapel at 1.30 and are due at St. Annes Cathedral at 2.30pm. 2 Looking Back The YDOA dinner took place on May 15th in the delightful surroundings of the Lady Anne Middleton Hotel in York. (Appropriately some of the buildings, not sure which, were once the workshops of several well known York organ builders up the early part of the last century!) It was an enjoyable social event with excellent food and service. Dr Alan Spedding and his wife were our guests. Alan delivered a very entertaining after dinner speech which included reflections on his long career together with a number of humorous anecdotes. I thoroughly enjoyed and felt very honoured to be sitting next to Alan and our Patron Dr. Francis Jackson, we had a very good evening of organist conversation. Alan and I discovered that we share similar enthusiasm for square Pistons, both of us being fortunate to play organs that have them! During the Half term school break, I took the opportunity once again to attend a lunchtime recital at Hull City Hall. The recitalist was Paul Derrett. He played an excellent programme and showed off the many tone colours of the very spectacular organ. Paul likes to play pieces which are no longer in print and would otherwise be forgotten. He certainly entertained the audience, with virtuoso performances, of a number of long forgotten pieces which were outstanding in all respects. Paul certainly knows how to bring out the many tone colours of this massive instrument. I hope to organise a trip in the near future to play this instrument. Several of our members supported the Annual recital at St. Columba`s URC church last week, given by Gordon Stewart. He played a very entertaining programme and showed off this very versatile and recently restored instrument. The organ only has modest resources in terms of number of stops but what a difference the new pistons, which Gordon put to good use, have made, enabling the resources to be used more effectively. I was very pleased that Gordon responded to my request and included a piece by the late Harrison ` Fred` Oxley. Harrison`s Daughter, Ruth is a friend and colleague of mine and she was present at the recital. For your Diary YDOA event: Saturday July 10th we are visiting two organs in the Middlesbrough area: The Roman Catholic Cathedral. The organ was built in 1987 by the Belgian company, Schumacher. Typical continental baroque sound, 2 manual and Pedal organs. And the nearby, Church of the Ascension Organ by Principal Pipe Organs of York Times and directions to follow in the July Pipe Line YDOA event: Wednesday 18th August Phillip Sangwine is organising a composite recital at All Saints Pavement York. The composite recital will take place at All Saints' Pavement at 7.30 on Wednesday 18th August. There should be some practice time available for around an hour before hand. Members intending to play need to submit a list of 2 or 3 pieces with each having a duration of around 4 to 7 minutes in length. The idea behind this is to present a balanced programme for everyone and it prevents any duplication of pieces by the members. 3 To start with, Phillip envisages that each member would play one piece, but if after planning the programme it transpires that there is still enough time, more pieces could be allocated. He also plans to have a programme printed for the event.
