Co-author of a book “Managing Strokes and TIAs in Practice” – The Royal Society
Of Medicine Press, London – published 2003
I am currently working on a paper regarding spectral analysis of EEG in
encephalopathy. I am also working on the development of a trigger averaged multi
channel EMG recording clinical protocol for the investigation of propriospinal
myoclonus.
Other Postgraduate Research
I have been involved in a NIH sponsored drug trial into a new treatment for diabetic
small fibre neuropathy assessing patients with quantitative sensory testing and
conventional nerve conduction studies – results to be published
Undergraduate Research
Project researching the effects of tonic plantar flexion on the activity
state of Renshaw cells in the human spinal cord using the Bussel technique
Project to develop guidelines for the use of atorvastatin in cholesterol
lowering programmes
Management responsibilities
I currently provide clinical leadership for the diagnostic video telemetry program and
am working with colleagues to develop new processes for clinical report
dissemination and new referral systems. I have also previously arranged a regular
joint paediatric epilepsy/EEG meeting and a regular departmental EEG meeting for
difficult diagnostic cases and quality assurance.

Teaching
As a consultant I continue to teach SpRs in neurophysiology and neurology as well as
medical student teaching. I continue to contribute to MRCP teaching in neurology and
general medicine where the opportunity arises. I have also contributed to the
undergraduate experiential learning experience as part of Keele medical school’s
teaching program. I continue to assist the student technicians with the medical
component of their undergraduate studies and with informal tutorials relating to their
degree course.
I have also recently co-organised the first West Midlands Epilepsy Workshop which
is due to run in July 2010 and am part of the faculty providing the epilepsy SSM at the
University of Birmingham.
As a SpR in neurology I have taken regular teaching sessions for 3rd and 5th year
medical students and have also under taken several teaching sessions with the PACES
membership candidates for both neurology and general medicine. I have also given
two lectures during the SHO teaching block (on lumbar puncture and subarachnoid
haemorrhage). I have contributed to the undergraduate teaching programme taking
tutorial groups in the 4th year neurology block in Dundee and have contributed to the
Special Study Module in Stroke Medicine
In the second year of my Senior House Officer rotation I also became involved in the
Pre-registration House Officer teaching programme.
Continuing Professional Development
I currently keep an up-to-date CPD diary with the royal college of physicians and
engage in the consultant annual appraisal process
Practical Procedures
During my postgraduate training I have gained experience in the following
procedures:
- A comprehensive range of nerve conduction studies and electromyography including
paediatric NCS/EMG
- Turns-amplitude analysis and multi-MUP analysis
- Volitional and stimulated single fibre studies (including paediatrics)
- Interpretation of standard and sleep deprived EEG (adult and paediatric)
- Specialist epilepsy clinic
- Intra-operative spinal cord monitoring (and spinal root monitoring with consultant
colleague)
- Monitoring during deep brain stimulation
- Video EEG telemetry
- Ambulatory EEG
- Quantitative sensory testing
- EMG guided botox and monitoring during ENT botox for dysphonia
- Non-EMG guided botox
- Interpretation of evoked responses
Also during general medicine:
- pleural aspiration
- chest drain insertion
- pleural biopsy
- ultrasound guided pleural biopsy (with radiologist)
- central line insertion
- endotracheal intubation
- ascitic tap/drain insertion - lumbar puncture
- arterial line insertion
- temporary pacing wire insertion
Medico legal Reports
I undertake nerve conduction studies and electromyography for the purposes of
medico-legal assessment where indicated by a referring clinician. The purpose of the
assessment is to provide objective assessment of nerve injury and to aid in defining
the presence and extent of peripheral nerve, plexus or nerve root injuries and where
necessary and possible to indicate the degree of or potential for nerve recovery. My
clinical work regularly involves the assessment of nerve and plexus injury following
trauma including blast injury and gun shot wounds and assessments where the
surgical repair of nerve injury is contemplated.
