From Planning Department Files: Brantford Expositor article, November 11, 1870 Residence of H.W. BRETHOUR, 88 Brant Avenue "We next come to the mansion of H.W. Brethour. This elegant private residence was completed during the past year at a cost of $7.000. It is of the Italian style of architecture, and was designed by John Turner, William Watt being the builder. In this mansion are sixteen rooms, all fitted out and designed with a special eye to comfort and elegance. Gas and hot and cold water are supplied to all the rooms. The building is heated with hot air from a furnace from Cowherds. The London Glass Works Company supply elegant stained glass windows. We understand Mr. Thomas Noble, is Agent for the Ontario Stained Glass Works in Brantford, and is prepared to fit up private residences with stained glass windows, in the best style and at very reasonable prices. If our reporter was a poet, which he is not, he could contentedly resign himself to the charge of this establishment, drinking in day after day inspiration from the, beautiful landscape obtainable from the southern balconies. We cannot linger, but notice in passing a neat frame cottage erected for Mr. Thompson, gardner for Mr. Brethour. This cottage is situated to the south of the mansion, and was built by William Watt at a cost of $500.” HENRY BRETHOUR 1870: built his home at 88 Brant Avenue.
