Interpretation of blood results for nurses
A one day course for nurses that will enable them to gain confidence in interpreting specimen results.
Nurses have a responsibility to support the patients during investigation process and ensure that diagnostic
processes are performed in a safe and timely manner. The nurses’ role in understanding and interpretation of blood
tests and investigation is pivotal to the delivery of holistic care that is required. Knowledge and understanding of the
blood results enable nurses to explain those results to the patients and often request and carry out further test when
necessary. Nurses have a responsibility to ensure that information given is true and appropriate and acknowledge
their limitation in diagnosis making process. Confident correct interpretation and understanding blood test results
enables nurses to take appropriate action and influence treatment that will benefit the patient.
Objectives:

to discuss the reasons for requesting laboratory tests and investigations
to discuss importance of safe identification of patient, filling forms appropriately and safe processing and
handling of samples
to discuss following blood tests: haematology, transfusion, coagulation, blood chemistry, cardiac enzymes
and proteins, serum electrolytes, renal, liver, endocrine studies
to understand normal values and variations that should be considered while interpreting blood results
to understand patient factors that affect test results
to discuss principles of specimen collection and handling sample
to perform and understand urinalysis
to understand ABG and analysis

All level of registered nurses and midwives
