SUMMARY OF IMPORTANT EVENTS AS ON 15.08.2009
RAINFALL/FLOOD SITUATION IN THE COUNTRY
ASSAM
 Light to moderate rainfall has been reported in some parts of
the State during last 24 hours.
 Total 05 human deaths have been reported in the State so far.
443 livestock have perished so far.
BIHAR
 Light to moderate rainfall has been reported in some parts of
the State during last 24 hours.
 Total 05 human deaths have been reported in the State so far.
 About 3.11 lakh people in 248 villages are reported to have
been affected.
ORISSA
 Light rainfall has been reported in some parts of the State during
last 24 hours.
 Total 56 human deaths have been reported in the State so far.
 19454 livestock have perished so far.
 About 3,84,000 people are reported to have been affected.
 1,26,000 ha cropped area are reported to have been affected.
 12547 houses are reported to have been damaged.
KERALA
 Light rainfall has been reported in some parts of the State during
last 24 hours.
 122 human deaths have been reported in the State so far.
 164 cattle/livestock have perished.
 About 1220558 people are reported to have been affected.
 25906.24 ha cropped area are reported to have been affected.
GUJARAT
 No significant rainfall has been reported in the State during last
24 hours.
 82 human deaths have been reported in the State so far. No
human death has been reported during last 24 hours.
 439 livestock have perished.
 About 6,33,981 people are reported to have been affected.
 2926 ha cropped area have affected.
 6122 houses are reported to have been damaged.
KARNATAKA
 No significant rainfall has been reported in some parts of the
State during last 24 hours.
 109 human deaths have been reported so far in the State. No
human death has been reported during last 24 hours.
 About 2,17,000 people in 252 villages and 14 districts are
reported to have affected.
 1161 cattle/livestock are reported to have been perished.
 137230 ha cropped area have affected.
 10877 houses are reported to have been damaged.
HUMAN DEATHS

As
per
provisional
information received from the affected States/UTs, 02 human
deaths have been reported by West Bengal, thus raising the total
death toll to 698 from 696.
NDMA
 Total 06 coys & 08 teams of NDRF Battalions have been
deployed in the flood affected districts of Assam (03-teams),
Bihar (01-coy & 03 teams), Kerala (01-team), Maharashtra
(04-coys & 01-team) and West Bengal (01-coy) for rescue
and relief operations.
IMD
 The axis of monsoon trough at mean sea level passes through
Ferozepur, Delhi, Kanpur, Daltanganj, Jamshedpur, Digha
and thence southeastwards to eastcentral Bay of Bengal.
Western end of the axis is likely to shift slightly southward
during next 48 hours.
 Widespread rainfall activity has occurred over parts of northwest
and central India and fairly widespread over east India,
northeastern states and south peninsula.
CENTRAL WATER COMMISSION
 There are 05 Moderate flood situation sites in the country.
INDIA METEOROLOGICAL DEPARTMENT
Monsoon Watch
 The axis of monsoon trough at mean sea level passes through
Ferozepur, Delhi, Kanpur, Daltanganj, Jamshedpur, Digha
and thence southeastwards to eastcentral Bay of Bengal.
Western end of the axis is likely to shift slightly southward
during next 48 hours.
 Widespread rainfall activity has occurred over parts of northwest
and central India and fairly widespread over east India,
northeastern states and south peninsula.
 Chief amounts of rainfall (≥ 4 cm) recorded at 0830 hours
IST of today are: Cherrapunji-37, Satna -14, Hamirpur-13,
Katra-12, Bapatala-11, Pendra, Banglore (AP) and Tirupathi
-9 each, Raisen-8, Nedumbessary, Hardoi, Khajuraho,
Chandbali and Imphal -7 each, Najibabad, Kottayam and
Paradip -6 each, Hassan, Nowgoan, Ongole, Nellore,
Bareilly, Moradabad, Hirakud, and Mukteshwar – 5 each,
Guna, Sultanpur, Sundernagar and Seoni – 4 each.
Main features
 The upper air cyclonic circulation over east Uttar Pradesh and
neighbourhood now lies over West Madhya Pradesh and
neighbourhood extending upto 1.5 km above mean sea level.
 An upper air cyclonic circulation over north Orissa &
neighbourhood now lies over north Chhattisgarh and
neighbourhood extending upto mid-trospheric level.
 Under the influence of above systems fairly widespread rainfall
activity with isolated heavy fall is likely over east central and
parts of northwest India during next 2-3 days.
 Fairly widespread rainfall activity with isolated heavy fall is
also likely over northeastern states during next 48 hours.
Warning
 Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over Himachal
Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, north Haryana, Delhi
& Chandigarh, West Bengal & Sikkim Bihar, Orissa, Madhya
Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Assam & Meghalaya and Arunachal
Pradesh.
Weather outlook for next two days
 Scattered to fairly widespread rainfall activity is likely along
foot hills of Himalayas, plains of northwest, east and extreme
south Peninsular India.
CENTRAL WATER COMMISSION
According to the Central Water Commission (CWC) report dated
August, 2009, there are 05 Moderate flood situation sites as
per details given below:15th
ASSAM


Brahmaputra at Dibrugarh is flowing at 105.15m
danger level of 104.24m with a steady trend.
Puthimari at Kamrup (Rangia) is flowing at 51.87m
danger level of 51.81m with a steady trend.
BIHAR

River Bagmati at Benibad (Muzaffarpur) is flowing at
49.20m against the danger level of 48.68m with a steady trend.

River Kosi at Baltara (Khagharia) is flowing at 34.48m
against the danger level of 33.85m with a falling trend.

River Kosi at Basua (Supaul) is flowing at 48.04m against
the danger level of 47.75m with a steady trend.
DETAILED SITUATION
ASSAM
 Light to moderate rainfall has been reported in some parts of
the State during last 24 hours.
 Total 05 human deaths have been reported in the State so far.
No human death has been reported during last 24 hours.
 443 livestock have perished so far.
 Following incessant rain, rail and road communication in Dhemaji
district has been snapped as flood water breached the National
Highway-52 at three places and rail line at two places.
 About 100 villages in Dhemaji districts are reported to have been
inundated.
 The Lakhimpur district has also hit by fresh floods.
 The National Highway in the district has suffered heavy erosion at
several points leading to disruption in vehicular movement.
 Several people have been evacuated to the safer places.
BIHAR
 Light to moderate rainfall has been reported in some parts of
the State during last 24 hours.
 Total 05 human deaths have been reported in the State so far.
No human death has been reported during last 24 hours.
 About 3.11 lakh people in 248 villages are reported to have
been affected.
 8725 people have been evacuated so far.
 12 health centers have also been opened.
 13 motor boats, 18 government boats and 334 private boats
have been pressed into service for rescue and relief operations.
ORISSA
 Light rainfall has been reported in some parts of the State during
last 24 hours.
 Total 56 human deaths have been reported in the State so far.
No human death has been reported during last 24 hours.
 19454 livestock have perished so far.
 About 3,84,000 people are reported to have been affected.
 1,26,000 ha cropped area are reported to have been affected.
 12547 houses (fully-870 & partially-11677) have been
damaged.
 62200 people have been evacuated so far.
 82 boats have been deployed in the affected areas for rescue and
relief operations.
 80 relief camps have been opened in the affected areas in which
about 64346 people are accommodated.

Medical centres have been opened and medical teams have also
been deployed for providing medical aid to the people in the flood
affected areas.
KERALA
 Light rainfall has been reported in some parts of the State during
last 24 hours.
 122 human deaths have been reported in the State so far. No
human death has been reported during last 24 hours.
 164 cattle/livestock have perished.
 About 1220558 people are reported to have been affected.
 25906.24 ha cropped area are reported to have been affected.
 22221 houses (fully-1196 & partially-21015) have been
damaged.
GUJARAT
 No significant rainfall has been reported in the State during last
24 hours.
 82 human deaths have been reported in the State so far. No
human death has been reported during last 24 hours.
 439 livestock have perished.
 About 6,33,981 people are reported to have been affected.
 2926 ha cropped area have affected.
 6122 houses (fully-558 & partially-5564) have been damaged.
 95 relief camps have been opened in the affected areas in which
about 24131 people are accommodated.
 08 boats have been deployed in the flood affected areas.
 54 medical teams & 09 veterinary teams have also been
deployed in the affected areas.
KARNATAKA
 No significant rainfall has been reported in some parts of the
State during last 24 hours.
 109 human deaths have been reported so far in the State. No
human death has been reported during last 24 hours.
 About 2,17,000 people in 252 villages and 14 districts are
reported to have affected.
 1161 cattle/livestock are reported to have been perished.
 137230 ha cropped area have affected.
 10877 houses (fully–216 & partially–10661) have been
damaged.
DEPLOYMENT OF NATIONAL DISASTER RESPONSE FORCE (NDRF)
ON 15th AUGUST, 2009
 In Assam, 03 teams consisting of 77 personnel (01 each in
N/Lakhimpur, Dhubri & Barpeta districts) alongwith equipment
have been deployed in the affected areas.
 In West Bengal, 01 coy consisting of 42 personnel alongwith
equipment have been deployed in Darjeeling district.
In Maharashtra, 04 coys (Mumbai - 03 and Nanded - 01) &
01 team in Amravati district consisting of 266 personnel
alongwith equipment deployed in the State.
 In Bihar, 01 Coy (Begusarai) & 03 Teams (02-Sitamarhi &
01-Bihta) consisting of 191 personnel alongwith equipment have
been deployed in Sitamarhi district.
 In Kerala, 01 team consisting of 31 personnel alongwith
equipment has been deployed in Calicut district.


 Moderate to heavy rainfall has been reported in some parts of
Uttar Pradesh, Orissa, Kerala, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Madhya
Pradesh, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Delhi (NCR),
Himachal Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and in some Northeastern
States.
 The rainfall activity in the rest of the country is not significant.
 Based on the reports received from State/UTs, details of extent of
damage and relief operations are appended in Annexure-I &
Annexure-II respectively.
