RENOVATION OVERVIEW
Macy’s Herald Square, the world’s largest and most legendary department
store – is set to engage and inspire a new generation of shoppers with a
spectacular multi-year, multi-million dollar renovation that will refashion the retail
landmark for the future.
The four-year project (2012-2015) will create a dynamic, state-of-the-art
shopping environment that will elevate the retail experience with the addition of
new multi-level luxury shops, restaurants and cafes, and the infusion of new
American and European designer collections.
The $400 million historic remodel of Macy’s world-famous flagship will
create an exciting global shopping destination that will continue to welcome the
store’s 20 million visitors annually, and evolve with the ever-changing cultural
and economic landscape of New York City.
The epic remodel of this retail institution will transform Herald Square into
a grand department store that will bridge its historical legacy with 21 st century
design and technology. Incorporating the most cutting-edge architectural and
aesthetic elements, this monumental makeover will expand the store’s selling
space by 100,000 square-feet to approximately 1.2 million square feet, creating a
spectacular stage to showcase the best merchandise assortments in apparel,
accessories, cosmetics, fragrances and home.
In the coming years, the store will be reconfigured with a new spacious
floor plan to make shopping more exciting and enjoyable. By revamping the
infrastructure of the building, the store’s eleven shopping levels will be
redesigned and realigned to allow customers to efficiently navigate the store via
intuitive way-finding and interactive store directories. Video walls featuring
runway presentations and fashion graphics will be interspersed throughout the
store.
The reinvention of Macy’s Herald Square will begin from the outside in,
starting with its famous Broadway façade that will be restored to its original
grandeur. The Main Broadway entrance will be reimagined in marble creating an
unforgettable entrance onto the Majestic Main Floor which will be raised to its
original height of 22-feet. The Main Floor will welcome in new luxury vendors
including Gucci, Burberry and Longchamp and set a dramatic backdrop for
designer handbags, accessories, cosmetics and fragrances, complete with
sweeping, curved staircases that will take customers to a new Mezzanine Level.
Additional exterior restoration will include the reopening of the ornate “Memorial
Entrance” on 34th Street, and store windows along Broadway, 34th Street and
Seventh Avenue. Sidewalks along the famous retail thoroughfare will also be
replaced. A new exterior lighting system will highlight the iconic building. Inside
of the store, the world-famous wooden escalators will be preserved and restored.
On a street renowned for awe-inspiring productions, Macy’s Herald
Square on Broadway and 34th Street raises the curtain on the World’s Largest
Shoe Floor featuring more than quarter million pairs of shoes and the brand-new
Herald Square Café, the store’s fashionable champagne, chocolate, and coffee
bar which opened in Fall 2012.
22 dining destinations from pub-inspired fare to a table service restaurant
on the 6th Floor featuring spectacular views of the Empire State Building will offer
epicurean options for customers. Stella 34, the newest dining hot spot in Herald
Square will join the New York restaurant scene with the Lower Level of the store
offering casual eateries.
The renovation will leave no floor untouched, ushering in more square
footage devoted to men’s apparel and accessories, home textiles and
furnishings, with a new demonstration kitchen on the 8th floor.
A brand-new Visitor Center will re-open on the Mezzanine Level to
welcome domestic and international shoppers, and the one-and-only Santa will
have a new home on the 7th floor as Macy’s Santaland moves from 8.
For the first time in its history, Macy’s Herald Square will undergo a top-tobottom renovation that will create a dramatic retail environment for the future and
herald in a new defining era in the store’s celebrated legacy.
