1st School of Medicine Postgraduate Research Day Date: Thursday 7th September 2007 Venue: Institute of Molecular Medicine and Trinity Centre for Health Sciences, St. James’s Hospital The School of Medicine at Trinity College Dublin has a significant commitment to research. It has a strong graduate program with over 200 students registered for degrees at PhD/MD level. It currently has the largest research income per school in the college and in the restructuring of the College; plans have been approved to have 5 Research Divisions and 1 Education Division within the School of Medicine. The 5 Research Divisions are Clinical and Molecular Sciences Science and Medicine of the Mind Integrative Biology Physical Medicine Population and Developmental Health The strength of the research effort within the school can be judged by the metrics of significant peer reviewed publications, major national/international grant awards and the development of structured PhD Programmes. TCD School of Medicine led Molecular Medicine and Neuroscience Programmes were the first recipients of HRB PhD Programmes in this country. Strengths in translational and clinical research can be judged by the recent award of a Welcome Trust – HRB Clinical Research Centre, led by Prof Dermot Kelleher, Head of School of Medicine. We recognise the value of our postgraduate students in providing the bedrock for the excellent research output that has been achieved by the School of Medicine during the last 5 years. In order to showcase this talent, the 1st TCD School of Medicine Postgraduate Research Day will take place on Friday 7th September 2007 in the Institute of Molecular Medicine and Trinity Centre for Health Sciences, St James’s Hospital. This is a superb opportunity to present individual research efforts to the School of Medicine faculty and the wider Trinity research community. A wide ranging series of short presentations and posters from postgraduate students within the School will be complimented by a number of invited presentations. I am writing to encourage you to submit an abstract to the Postgraduate Research Day. Details for submission are provided overleaf with an abstract submission deadline of Friday 6th July 2007. We would really encourage as many of you as possible to submit abstracts for the meeting and also to encourage your fellow researchers to attend. This occasion also provides the opportunity for you to network with other researchers within the School of Medicine and other Schools within the college. We intend that the School of Medicine Postgraduate Research Day will be an annual event, showcasing the postgraduate talent within our School and providing opportunities for establishing interdisciplinary collaborations and networks. I look forward to meeting you in the Institute of Molecular Medicine for this important event on the College Calendar. Prof. Mark Lawler, Director of Teaching & Learning (Postgraduate)
