The Sinai Urban Health Institute (SUHI) was founded in March 2000 to generate creative approaches to improve the health of Chicago’s urban communities. Led by a team of dedicated and energetic social epidemiologists, the Institute provides evidence-based examination of community health status, the effectiveness of interventions and clinical care, and health-care delivery methodologies. A major component of the Institute’s work involves social issues, such as racism and poverty, and their impact on health. In 2003-2004, the Sinai Urban Health Institute conducted the largest door-to-door health survey ever done in Chicago. Results revealed dramatically high smoking rates in some of Chicago’s community areas, most notably North Lawndale which had a smoking rate of 39% of adults 18-75. We are seeking a full-time Health Educator / Supervisor to assist organizing and coordinating project activities associated with the Breathing Freedom Program. The goals of the Breathing Freedom Program are to develop a culturally appropriate comprehensive community-based tobacco prevention and cessation campaign and intervention for North Lawndale. The Health Educator will work with the Project Team, under the guidance of the Project Director. Specific responsibilities may include: Building and maintaining relationships with area hospitals, community clinics, and faith based organizations; Serving as a key representative of the project to the community, actively seeking input from community members on intervention design and implementation; Planning and/or participating in community meetings, educational forums, health fairs, and other events to increase breast cancer awareness and to inform the community about the intervention; Ensuring effective communication among the research team members and project staff, as well as among significant study partners; Assisting with outcome evaluation and research activities as needed; Gathering and analyzing data to conduct a thorough process evaluation of the intervention; Prepare written reports, IRB applications and develop a health promotion curricula Documenting all aspects of the project to facilitate replication; Other SUHI project activities as needed A successful candidate should: Have either (1) an M.P.H. in Community Health, Behavioral Health Sciences, Health Education or a closely related field and one year of experience, or (2) a B.A. or B.S. in Public Health, Behavioral Health Sciences, Sociology, or a closely related field and 3 years of experience; Public speaking skills and the ability to maintain effective collaborative relationships with community organizations are essential. Be sensitive to the needs and culture of diverse communities; Be able to communicate effectively via written, oral and visual media; Have excellent organizational skills; Be able to manage multiple tasks and prioritize; § Have a working knowledge of Microsoft products (Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint)
