[marked in pencil: “Sept. 25, 1930”] Ressler obituaries from the collection of the Historical & Genealogical Society of Indiana County, Pennsylvania KILLED BY HER LOVER Ella Ressler Murdered by the Man Whose Love She Spurned HER ASSAILANT KILLS HIMSELF Crazed by Jealousy and Drink, Dan Ressler Kills Himself and His Cousin. THE GIRL LIVED OVER NIGHT. Cramer, this county, was the scene of a tragic murder and suicide last Thursday afternoon. Because his cousin, Miss Ella Ressler, refused to marry him, Daniel Ressler, crazed with jealousy and drink, deliberately shot the girl to death and then sent a bullet crashing through his own brain. The deed was committed in sight of the murdered girl’s mother. Miss Ressler formerly kept house for the mother of the man who killed her. He had more than once proposed marriage to her but had as often had been refused. He was a miner of violent temper, and on different occasions had been heard to remark that the girl’s life would pay the forfeit if she continued to spurn his advances. A short time ago he followed her to church with a gun intending to shoot her when she came out, but parties, knowing of the threats he had made, disarmed him. On another occasion he lay in wait for her, but was detected and disarmed. On Thursday afternoon Miss Ressler, her mother and a brother-in-law named Bowers, started from their home near Cramer to walk to Conemaugh Furnace where they intended to take a train for Johnstown. On the way they were joined by Ressler. He and the girl fell a short distance behind the other members of the party. Suddenly the report of a pistol was heard, and the mother and her companion turned to see the daughter reel and fall to the road. The murderer coolly surveyed his victim, then, placing the pistol between his eyes, pulled the trigger. He was dead when the others reached him. The girl was still living, but unconscious. Help arrived and the young woman was removed to her home. She lingered until early Friday morning, when she died. There can scarcely be any question that Ressler deliberately planned the murder. The day of the crime he made his preparations. After taking a bath he carefully dressed himself, then going to the mantle took from it a bottle of whiskey. As he placed the bottle to his lips he remarked to his aunt “This will be my last drink on earth.” He then went out and joined his victim. The aged mother is prostrate with the tragedy, coming as it does so closely upon the tragic death of two nieces, sisters of the murderer, who, while they were crossing the P.R.R. tracks at Johnstown, about two years ago, were run down by an express train and instantly killed. The crime occasioned great excitement in the neighborhood. Ressler was buried on Saturday morning and the murdered girl on Sunday afternoon. The services on Saturday were conducted by Rev. Stephen Hildebrand, an uncle of the murderer and the murdered. Ressler was aged 28 years; the girl was 18. Miss Ressler’s funeral was the largest ever held in Cramer. The services were in charge of the Cramer chapter of the Epworth League, and the sermon was preached by Rev. Bergen, of the M.E. church. The league furnished a beautiful floral emblem in memory of their departed friend. In a pocket of Ressler’s coat was found a letter stating that it was his intention to commit the crime.
