Expedition to the Archean
Assignment: Your team will be using a time machine to lead an expedition to the Archean at around 3.0
Billion years before present. To successfully complete this task, you will need to plan for the excursion.
You need to anticipate the conditions and look for evidence to answer some burning questions about this
portion of the Earth’s history. You should plan for the trip using published information that describes the
Archean.
Research questions
What do you want to find out? Why?
What evidence do you hope to collect? Why?
Where is the best place to discover the answer? Why?
Equipment
What equipment will you need for life support?
What equipment will you need for data collection?
Anticipated Conditions
Is there a place to land?
What is the temperature, weather, etc.?
What is the atmosphere composed of? Can you breathe?
Will there be any water? Will you be able to drink it?
What life or evidence of its presence do you expect to observe (or not observe)? Why?
Do you need to worry about infectious diseases? Why?
