Postdoctoral Grantsmanship Application Instructions
Grantsmanship Workshop for Postdoctoral Fellows

Application package must contain all of the following items:
1. Cover Letter and CV – Include a letter to Dr. Kevin Morano explaining your suitability for
participation in the workshop. Priority will be given to applicants who have 3-4 figures’
worth of preliminary data, or a manuscript accepted or nearly ready to submit, to support
their proposal.
2. Applicant Information Form - Save the blank form to your computer before completing in
order to retain the information. If you are unable to do so, you may print and handwrite the
information.
3. Two abstracts - each limited to 250 words, single spaced, Times New Roman12
a) Scientific Abstract- as if you are submitting for a meeting or conference.
b) Lay Audience Abstract – as if you were presenting your science
to a non-scientific professional audience. (e.g. Think in terms of the TV
show NOVA).
4. Postdoctoral Research Fellow / Mentor Agreement – Must be completed and signed by
both the applicant and the Mentor/PI.
Participants must be able to attend all five sessions.
Application Deadline: Monday, September 29, at 5:00 PM.
Original and complete documents must be hand delivered or sent inter-office mail to:

We ask that mentors and fellows sign a cooperative agreement that outlines expectations and commitments in
order to ensure that roles and expectations are mutually understood.
• the participant will attend all workshop sessions and commit to meet all workshop deadlines
• the participant will set aside time, in consultation with the mentor, for writing and revision
• the participant will actively solicit and incorporate advice and suggestions from the mentor
• the mentor will assist the participant in outlining a suitable research proposal
• the mentor will review and assist in the revision of preliminary drafts of the proposal
• the mentor will meet with the participant to discuss progress, concerns and planning
• the mentor will adapt and finalize a comprehensive training plan
