NORTH CANBERRA GUNGAHLIN ATHLETICS PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2011/12 The past year has been one of great success for NCGA athletes at both the national and international level. NCGA remains the largest athletics club in the ACT, both in terms of participants but also in providing officials to help in the running of various meets. Thanks to each one of you for your involvement. As a club we continue to retain a strong financial position, enabling us to continue to support those NCGA athletes who attend either national or international events. The committee welcomes written application for funding support during the year and in the 2011/12 season assisted various athletes. We also thank our major supporter, Ainslie Football Club for their annual sponsorship, as well as The Runners Shop and Rebel Sport for their ongoing support. Remember to mention NCGA when buying athletics gear at either of these retail outlets. NCGA was a major supporter of the efforts by AACT to revitalise the summer athletics program. It provided financial support as did Weston Creek and Woden Harriers for two distance running events in summer including a very popular “mile”. Under the great leadership of Dianne Calvert NCGA also initiated the idea of a multi event championship which was successfully held in February and attracted entrants from all around the country. Thanks to Dianne and her committee for their sensational efforts in respect of this event. AACT has just completed a review of the Club structure in the AACT and it is noteworthy that whilst a number of club’s provide little to the Association or their members NCGA is an exception. NCGA stands ready to assist the executive of the AACT in revitalising athletics in the region. NCGA again continues to host a very successful winter program of crosscountry runs for school children and their parents at Lake Ginninderra on a Saturday morning. Thanks to Scott McTaggart, Dianne Calvert, and participating parents for their assistance in running these events. It is always dangerous to pick out any of our members for outstanding athletic performances during the season and again congratulations to all members for their efforts, be it a national selection and representation, a big win, a PB or just the feeling of a job well done. For the past season however, as a club it would be remiss not to commend a number of members who have had significant international success during this year including Lauren Boden, Louise Ellery, Richard Nicholson, Katherine Proudfoot, Angus Gould, Anthony Haber and Brendon Reading. Congratulations to Lauren and Louise and Katherine for their selections/nominations for the forthcoming Olympic and Paralympic games. Angus Gould’s Youth Commonwealth Games Gold medal last year was a sensational achievement. NCGA athletes were extremely prominent at the Athletics ACT award night last month taking out the premier awards, plus the various age awards and the club again dominated trophies for points in the numerous age categories. Congratulations to Erika Vredenbregt for winning the point score for the fourth year in a row. Athletics could not operate without the support of officials and I pay tribute to those members who have fronted up week in, week out as officials. Issues around attracting more volunteers are becoming pressing and will be an issue for the AACT Board to consider. Thanks to Dianne Calvert for her efforts in ensuring enough official and volunteers were available for competitions, a necessary and sometimes difficult task. I take this opportunity to acknowledge Neil Boden who has represented NCGA on the Board of Athletics ACT and kept the club in the loop and Kathy Southgate in her role as a selector for AACT representation at national meets. In conclusion I would again pay tribute to the NCGA committee who have supported me in my role throughout the past 12 months. To club treasurer Barbara for her ongoing efforts that makes being the President a breeze. To other committee members Dianne Calvert, Kathy Southgate, Linda Vredenbregt and Michael Reading for their contribution and support. I will be stepping down as President of NCGA this year and feel guilty over my very limited input over the past year but with board positions with both athletics and triathlon ACT I have over-committed. I wish my successor all the best and will be there to provide support as required. I would also congratulate our 2011/12 Club Person of the Year award winner and all those athletes who train and compete, and give of their best.
