Reflections of Self: Collage
Length of Lesson: 50 to 75 minutes
Grade Level: Grade Six
Subject: Visual Arts

Topic: Collage

Materials Required: White Glue, Scissors, Construction paper or cardstock
(11x17), Magazines to cut up (Fashion, Sports, National geographic etc.) at least 2
per student, Markers and pencils.
Teacher will require white board and markers.
 Previous Knowledge: The students have worked on fundamentals in art for
some time; they must understand basic colour theory, composition and balance. They will
need to have a good idea of how to cut and paste. In a previous lessen we have discussed
constructive criticism.

Learning Intentions:
o The students will use acquired skills in cutting and pasting to make an
attractive and complete collage.
o Students will reflect on the elements of self to describe themselves in the
form of a collage
o Students will participate in a “group criticism” to self evaluate and
comment constructively on the other students works.
 Connection to the QEP
Competency 1:
o To Produce individual works in the Visual Arts –Key feature: To use
personal ideas inspired by the stimulus for creation
o Cross curricular competencies: Uses Creativity, Cooperates with Others.

Hook/Set
o The teacher will begin by showing the students a work of art which is very
personal and describes a personality.
o For the first 10 minutes of class the students will brainstorm with the
teacher the various elements that make up a personality and the concept of
“self” The students will be asked the question of “what makes up your
identity, your personality?” This should also be connected with how to
represent your self using colour and line, and symbolism, and other
fundamentals covered thus far.
o Each student will be given 2 minutes to list on paper, followed by 2
minutes of reflection and interaction with a partner. For the last 5 minutes
the teacher will write down ideas in a brainstorm web on the whiteboard.
These could include:
 Hobbies and Activities
 Beliefs and passions
 Favourites
 Colour
 Symbols
 Physical Traits

Main Learning Activity:
o The Students will then be given the supplies needed to make a collage
representing the elements the class discussed as being elements of self.
They will work individually on their collages for 30 minutes.
o Each collage should include a combination of words and images which
represent themselves, the students will be given some liberty to the way
they wish to proceed.
o The teacher will circulate during the work period to supervise and give
pointers.


Closure:
o For the last 10 minutes of class, (if the time has run out this could happen
in a later lesson), the class will have a group critique. This involves laying
all of the works out on a table and looking at them one by one, students
will be allowed to self evaluate, and be encouraged to comment
constructively on all the other works. There will be an explanation of
“constructive criticism”. Critiquing works of art is an important part of the
art curriculum and this is a great opportunity to have students practice
constructive criticism.
Method for Evaluation:
o The students will be evaluated by the teacher through three categories,
 Originality and creativity.
 Effort and participation.
 Inclusion of all elements required, and the skill and care taken to
put the collage
The students will also self evaluate verbally during the group discussion.
