ACIDS FOUND IN MEYER LABORAOTRY PRODCUTS
Hydrofluoric Acid
Sulfuric Acid
Citric Acid
Phosphoric Acid
TYPES OF ACIDS
Strong Acids - A strong acid will dissociate completely in water. Examples of strong acids – Sulfuric (very
strong) and Phosphoric (strong – closer to the weak end of the scale than the strong end). Weak Acids - A
weak acid will only dissociate to a certain percentage; often a very small percentage only. Examples of weak
acids – Hydrofluoric and Citric. Remember: the terms strong acid and weak acid don’t refer to how
much harm these acids could cause should the user come in contact (bodily) with the different acids.
USES FOR ACIDS
Hydrofluoric Acid – Used for cleaning iron and steel castings, in the refining of certain metals, for etching
glass and for cleaning mineral sands. It is widely used as an aluminum cleaner and brightener and can be
used to remove rust stains from fabric in commercial laundries.
Sulfuric Acid – The major use of sulfuric acid in the production of fertilizers. It is widely used in the
manufacture of hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, dyes, explosives and drugs. It is used in processing metals –
in cleaning of iron and steel before plating.
Citric Acid – Citric Acid is the mostly widely organic acidulate. Used for flavor, metal chelation, pH
adjustment, replacement for corrosive acids and textile finishing.
Phosphoric Acid – Phosphoric Acid is used while performing certain jobs; catalyst in making ethylene,
purification of hydrogen peroxide, rust proofing metals before painting and coagulating rubber latex. Also,
this acid is used to make detergents, dental cements, flavoring syrups, soft drinks and fertilizers.
AB-327
Hydrofluoric Acid (14%), Sulfuric Acid (16%), and Surfactants
More surfactants than AB-329. AB-327 is used to brighten and clean aluminum, and steel surfaces. Don’t use
on brick masonry, marble, granite, sandstone, terra cotta, exposed aggregate, stone buildings, glass, concrete or
limestone unless etching is desired. The sulfuric acid in this product is used to create acid value and little else.
AB-327 will foam more than AB-329. AB-327 is a safe truck wash, cleans all metals to their fullest and
removes road tar and diesel exhaust.
AB-329
Hydrofluoric Acid (14%), Sulfuric Acid (16%) and Surfactants
Less surfactants than AB-327. AB-329 is used to brighten and clean aluminum, and steel surfaces. Don’t use
on brick masonry, marble, granite, sandstone, terra cotta, exposed aggregate, stone buildings, glass, concrete or
limestone unless etching is desired. The sulfuric acid in this product is used to create acid value and little else.
AB-329 will foam less than AB-327.
AC-350
Hydrofluoric Acid (1%-4%), Phosphoric Acid (8%-12%) and Surfactants
AC-350 has more cleaning capabilities and therefore is more of a detergent that AB-327 and AB-329. The
phosphoric acid in AC-350 is what really sets it apart from the AB-327 and AB-329. AC-350 can be used
on aluminum as well as stainless steel. Don’t use on brick masonry, marble, granite, sandstone, terra cotta,
exposed aggregate, stone buildings, glass, concrete or limestone unless etching is desired.
AC-TO
Citric Acid (18%-22%), Sulfuric Acid (12%-15%) and Surfactants
This product was designed for a potato chip and pork rind plant. It was used to clean the carbonized black
that had built up on the grease vats. Extreme caution must be used with the application of this product. The
citric acid in AC-TO gives this product good cleaning capabilities. It should be treated as an acid detergent
rather than an acid brightener.
AC-101
Phosphoric Acid (>30%) and Surfactants
Highly concentrated cleaner formulated to remove mineral deposits, scale and milk stone from food
processing equipment. The phosphoric acid in this product gives it good cleaning capabilities – low foam, free
rinsing, USDA approved and leaves stainless bright and shiny.
Delime
Phosphoric Acid (>20%) and Surfactants
Professional strength cleaner and descaler that is specially designed to remove heavy lime and scale deposits
without the damaging effect of stronger acids – low foam, no odors or fumes, corrosion inhibitors and free
rinsing.
