Reduce,Reuse, Recycle A WebQuest for Kindergarten This covers Virginia Kindergarten SOL K.10 Designed by Elizabeth Windom elizabethwindom@attbi.com INTRODUCTION TRASH! What do you do with it? Throw it away? Or do you reuse it? Your mission as Rubbish Rover, is to discover new ways to reuse the stuff you would throw away. Good Luck! THE TASK Your mission will be to work alone and with other Rubbish Rovers to discover ways to reuse trash. First you will have to meet with the Head Rover, your teacher. He/She will have the group, make a chart of ideas on how to reuse trash and introduce you to the symbol that means: recycle. Then you will make a Three Rs book. Next, as a group you will read a Rebus story on the computer about recycling and learn the Rubbish Rovers theme song: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, by Rozanne Lanczak Williams. And after your training, you will be ready for your final mission: to make an art project at home of reusable trash and bring it in to share with your fellow Rovers. Be creative and have fun! THE PROCESS Task 1- 3: will be directed by the Head Rover. Task 4: will be done as a home project to be brought in and shown to your class. TASK 1 You will work with the whole group and the Head Rover to make a chart listing ways you can reuse trash using the Three Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle). You will also learn the symbol for recycle. TASK 2 After working on the chart, you will make your own book about the Three Rs. All the materials, you will need, will be given to you by the Head Rover. 1. When you put your book together, you will need to decorate the front cover. Please remember to put your name on your book. 2. Then you will have a page for each of the Three Rs. On each page there will be a definition, but no word. For this part, you will have to use the computer to help you find the answer. You will need to click on the words below that are the color blue to find the word that matches the meaning. Then write the word on the line next to the correct definition. (You MUST ask the Head Rover to help you get on the computer and show you what you need to do.) *You may work with another Rubbish Rover. WORDS: Reduce Reuse Recycle 3. After you have found which word matches the correct definition, you will need to do one of the following: a. On the same page, draw pictures to show examples of that word. b. On the same page, glue on pictures that you have cut out of magazines that will show examples of that word. *Example: For the word reduce; you might draw a picture of someone using a lunch box instead of a paper bag to carry his or her lunch in for school. Task 3 You will be working with the whole group on this part of the mission. This will be lead by the Head Rover. 1. Click on the word in blue and you will come to the Rebus Story: Reusable Puzzles! Read along as the Head Rover leads. Join in a group discussion about the story and help come up with art ideas using trash that can be recycled. 2. Join in a sing-along to learn the Rubbish Rovers theme song: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle by Rozanne Lanczak Williams. Sing loud! Task 4 Great Job! If you have completed your training, you are ready for your final mission. 1. The Head Rover is giving you the mission of finding things around your home that you are planning to throw away and making an art project from it. He / She will be giving you a sheet with instructions on it so that you parents can help you get started. 2. After your project is complete, bring it to school to show to the class.
