HAZELWOOD SCHOOL DISTRICT
ALGEBRA 2 AND HONORS ALGEBRA 2 SYLLABUS
Course Description:
In this course students learn advanced algebraic number systems, operations, and
forms. Students engage in activities which require them to communicate using the
language of algebra, explore variations, graphs, linear relations, matrices, systems,
parabolas and quadratic equations, quadratic relations, polynomials, functions, powers,
roots, exponents, logarithms, trigonometry, and statistics. The course emphasizes
problem solving.
To receive honors credit, students are challenged to follow a rigorous pace and
additional concepts, research, and problems required.
Approved Course Materials and Resources:
Textbook and Resources:
ALGEBRA 2 Integration, Applications, Connections, New York: Glencoe/McGraw-Hill,
2001. $55.00
Video/Movies:
Video clips from United Streaming are approved for classroom use.
No full length movies are approved in the mathematics curriculum.
Course Expectations:
Students will be expected to bring pencils, a notebook, scientific calculator, and their
textbook to class everyday. Taking notes, doing assigned homework, participating fully
in classroom activities, and seeking additional help when needed are essential elements
in successfully mastering the concepts of Algebra 2.
The honors course is taught at a faster pace allowing extra class time for deeper
investigation of the concepts by conducting research, solving challenging problems, and
completing and presenting projects to further challenge a student. Challenging problem
solving is required on a daily basis in this honors program with research conducted as
needed. A minimum of one project per quarter is required. Because of the complexity
of these additional requirements, more detail and work will be required outside
classroom hours.
Sample Course Activities/Projects/Assessments:
Assessments:
Each chapter test serves as the District Common Assessments. A scoring guide and
grade calculator will ensure consistent scoring for all students across the district.
A comprehensive semester final exam is required at the end of each semester. Other
informal and formal assessments, such as quizzes, observations, classroom
assignments, projects, and participation, will occur periodically through out each
chapter.
