Introduction: Students are expected to develop a thorough knowledge of science and its
relationships to technology and society. They are to identify and analyze
problems; explore and test solution; interpret and evaluate information.
Students are expected to develop a critical sense of wonder and curiosity;
acquire new knowledge, and solve problems. This course is intended to let
students become aware of the many careers related to science, technology,
and the environment.
General Objectives:
1. Gain an increased understanding of the nature of science, and use of the
scientific method to answer questions and solve problems.
2. Develop an awareness of the impact of science and related technologies on
society, the economy, and upon the local and global environment.
3. Develop safe and efficient laboratory skills, and demonstrate the ability to work
cooperatively with others.
4. Be able to apply the knowledge and skills learned in science class to choices and
decisions involving science and technology, at home, or in the workplace.
5. Students will gain the ability to make informed decisions about further career
studies and careers in science.

substances, on the basis of their properties, and relate these properties to
their safe use, storage and disposal
Investigate and classify chemical reactions
Explain the law of conservation of mass when balancing chemical reactions

Requirements for Success
1. ATTENDANCE: Students must make every effort to attend all classes. Regular
attendance is one of the most important factors for academic success. Lateness is a
form of disrespect. If you are late, you are still expected to attend class. Enter the
room quietly, sit down and get to work. Do not disrupt the class.
2. STUDY: Regular studying and review of course material at home and preparation for
quizzes and tests is essential
3. RESPONSIBLE: Students are responsible to obtain and/or make up all missed readings,
notes, materials, assignments, quizzes and/or labs during any absence. Students may
obtain missed items from other students or the instructor at an appropriate time so as
not to disturb the class.
4. QUESTION: Be sure to ask questions to clarify concepts. Tutorial is every day before
and after school. Please make an appointment with your teacher to ensure that you get
the help that you need.
5. BEHAVIOUR: Mature and considerate behaviour is expected in class. Students who do
not meet an acceptable standard of behaviour will not be permitted to continue
disrupting others.

Assessment:
Formative = practice that is gained while learning
0%
**We will participate in a variety of formative exercises throughout the course**
Quizzes
Worksheets
Projects
Text readings/questions
Lab Reports
Summative = evidence used to assess understanding
100%
** Summative assessments include major projects, topic tests, unit tests, lab reports,
a cumulative final exam and the teachers’ professional judgement.**
Within the 100% summative, marks will be distributed as follows:
Unit A
25%
Unit B
25%
Unit C
25%
Unit D
15%
Lab Skills
5%
Attitude
5%
There will also be a final exam. As we move to Outcomes based reporting we are
implementing a first step. Rather than a traditional raw score, the final exam will be divided
into specific outcomes and assigned according to the corresponding unit. This change may
be different from previous reporting experiences. We encourage you to contact us at the
school if you have any questions. We are planning a parent information night for early in
October where we can help show you how to best understand this new form of reporting.
