DETERMINED TO SUCCEED

Determined to Succeed
What is it?
‘Determined to Succeed’ is a programme designed to encourage a greater sense of enterprise
among Scotland’s young people. It has been created by the Scottish Executive and sets out a
clear vision for Enterprise in Education.
Enterprise in Education
What is it?
It is not about producing the entrepreneurs of tomorrow.
Successful programmes can meet the needs of all pupils.
It is about encouraging opportunities and experiences across the curriculum, which supports
the development of capable and confident learners, who are enterprising in attitude and
approach.
What does it mean for my child?
Determined to Succeed gives pupils a chance to take responsibility for their own learning. It
helps them reflect on their strengths, passions and abilities; it helps them understand what
works best for them; and it provides the support they need to make the most of those
qualities.
Each school within East Lothian has developed a framework which tries to embed the qualities
of enterprise in the curriculum. This is available from your child’s school.
Your child will be exposed to a number of enterprising experiences and approaches throughout
their school career. You may find your child talking about these experiences at home.
What are the benefits of Enterprise in Education for my child?
Young people will have the opportunity to develop a:

better understanding of themselves;
better understanding of the world at work;
‘can do’ attitude;
sense of achievement; and
sense of responsibility.
The result should be:

more positive attitudes towards school and learning;
the development of skills beyond school;
increased levels of qualifications; and
a determination to succeed.
How does this link with A Curriculum for Excellence?
A Curriculum for Excellence takes a new and different approach to the way the curriculum is
organised.
1. Through A Curriculum for Excellence, young people will be given the best possible
chance to realise their potential for a successful future.
2. Excellence in education means putting the child first and equipping every young person
with the knowledge and skills most suited to their particular talents and aspirations.
3. A strong emphasis will be placed on literacy, numeracy, citizenship, health and wellbeing and the essential skills for life and work.
successful learners
confident individuals
The purposes of education are to enable all young people to become:
responsible citizens
to society and at work
effective contributors
A curriculum for Excellence is designed to allow children to develop each of the four capacities
detailed in the diagram above. Determined to Succeed fits in well within this new framework
and the table below shows how we can use Determined to Succeed to meet these four
capacities.
Business Involvement
Teachers cannot deliver a good Enterprise in Education programme alone. We currently have
support from a number of businesses throughout East Lothian.
Representatives from these companies and organisations support us in a number of ways.
Businesses who are involved with us say that working with young people can be highly
instructive. Their enthusiasm and unrestrained thinking can generate some interesting new
ideas and offer a fresh perspective on their businesses.
Can you help?
Parents can get more involved by providing environments for children to do the same out of
school. Some of these include:
 Discuss with your child their strengths and weaknesses and build on these.
 In any work they do try to use encouraging things like “Everyone can do something
well” or “Do your best”
 When your child is working, tell then that it ok to make mistakes as we use them to
improve ourselves.
 Encourage your child to experiment with any new ideas they have both on their own
and with in a group.
 Encourage your child to succeed as it boosts confidence and makes them want to try
again.
