Post graduate internship opportunity with a sustainable aquaculture project TITLE: IMTA (Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture) Intern LOCATION: St. Andrews, New Brunswick CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS: * * * * * * * B.Sc. or B.Eng Knowledge of common software applications and an ability to quickly learn complex software An ability to liaise with a diverse range of clients (e.g. scientists, industry personal, government) Must be comfortable working around water and boats Must have an aptitude for managing large amounts of information/data Ability to work independently or with a team English DESCRIPTION OF INTERNSHIP: An aquaculture sustainability project in the Bay of Fundy, Canada, is successfully making the transition from an experimental to a commercial scale. Mussels and kelp grown beside salmon cages have accelerated growth rates due to the augmentation of their natural food sources by nutrients generated from the salmon. This aquaculture practice, were the by-products of one species becomes the nutrient inputs for another is known as Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA). Economic diversity is fostered by the culture of additional harvestable commodities within the same site licence area, and the overall nutrient load to the environment is reduced. This project is presently the lead project of its kind in the world and has been featured in a number of mainstream media forums, such as an episode of the National Geographic Documentary Series, 'Strange Days on Planet Earth' at <http://www.pbs.org/strangedays/episodes/dangerouscatch/>. These may include a combination of, feeding species, data management, writing reports, field collection, image analysis, water chemistry, video production, literature sourcing, general maintenance, office duties and laboratory work. As such, this position is best suited for a first class generalist with an ability to comfortably switch between disciplines.
