AP Psychology ~ Mrs. Hollenbaugh The Lucifer Effect, by Philip Zimbardo ASSIGNMENT: After reading The Lucifer Effect, students may wish to “tour" the Holocaust Museum online at http://www.ushmm.org/ (or visit the museum in person) before answering the following questions. All students must answer question A: A. Do you believe that Zimbardo is correct when he asserts that social psychological factors such as: obedience, conformity, groupthink, etc., caused the German populace to commit such heinous acts against the Jews and other groups? Please defend your answer in one full page (minimum). B. Please select ONE of the topics to address below in 2 pages (minimum). You may need to use the internet for additional information. 1. Zimbardo says the following about evil, "Evil consists in intentionally behaving in ways that harm, abuse, demean, dehumanize, or destroy innocent others - or using one's authority and systemic power to encourage or permit others to do so on your behalf. In other words, 'knowing better, but doing worse'." Brainstorm some examples of evil in the world. What factors allow that evil to occur/exist? Discuss: what are they personally doing that's evil? (what choices are they making that harm others?) Discuss: who are the "innocent others"? Discuss: if it is considered "normal" by mainstream society, is it still evil? Identify and evaluate actions or traditions that were at one time considered "normal," but that most of us would consider evil today. What about actions/traditions considered normal today… do they meet the definition of evil? If so, if it's considered "normal" by mainstream society (or by the primary culture involved), is it evil? 2. In one section, Zimbardo asks readers to reflect on how well they really know themselves and others, and how they would behave in challenging situations. Discuss the ways in which your behavior has been affected by EACH of the following psychological factors: Obedience Conformity (within a group, within your family, etc.) Groupthink Social roles Bystander effect Then, with these experiences in mind, discuss how you might react in such situations as: Rwanda, the Holocaust, Darfur, the Spanish Inquisition, bullying, hazing, etc. (Choose at least two to discuss.) 3. Examine the language of violence and evil, both from the perspective of how we demoralize and objectify (such as calling people cockroaches or other animal names) and in the way we use euphemisms to distance ourselves from the violence and evil (such as Hitler's "final solution," which doesn't sound like mass murder and focuses on problem solving). 4. Martin Luther King, Jr. said "(we) must learn that to passively accept an unjust system is to cooperate with that system, and thereby to become a participant in its evil." Using this quote as a springboard, explore the ways we passively cooperate with injustice, both on the small scale (seeing someone get teased and not doing anything about it; listening to someone tell a racist joke, etc.) and the larger scale (not speaking up when a corporation does something unethical, etc.), and then brainstorm ways to safely, positively respond in such situations. Note: This assignment is due on Monday, September 10th. Your final product should be typed (MLA format), and include proper citations where necessary. Minimum 3 full pages.
