SAFE SCHOOLS – USE OF TRAINED
DETECTION CANINES
The Governing Board of Manteca Unified School District is committed to providing
students and employees with a safe environment in which to learn and work that is free
from illicit drugs, alcohol, and weapons. Hereby, the Board of Education of Manteca
Unified School District prohibits the illegal presence of drugs, drug paraphernalia,
controlled substances, alcohol, weapons, or any type of explosive devices, or any other
intoxicant on school district property or at any District sponsored event. This prohibition
applies to employees, students, patrons, visitors, and any other persons.
Student lockers are under the joint control of the student and the District. School officials
shall have the right and ability to open and inspect any school locker without student
permission when they have reasonable suspicion that a search will disclose evidence of
illegal possession or activity, or when odors, smoke, fire, or other threat to student health,
welfare, or safety emanates from the locker.
Persons are responsible for the contents of any locker, desk, bag, or other item they
possess or bring on to District property or to District sponsored events, or for any vehicle
brought on to District property or within one thousand feet of District property as
outlined by the City of Manteca, Lathrop, and Stockton ordinances and the Federal DrugFree School Zone laws. No person shall possess, place, keep, or maintain any article or
material that is prohibited by law or District policy in lockers, vehicles, desks, or bags
assigned to them or under their control while on District property or at District sponsored
events.
In an effort to keep the school and workplace free of the above-referenced items, the
District will utilize the services of non-aggressive trained detection canines to sniff out
and alert to the presence of those substances prohibited by law or District policy. These
inspections shall be unannounced and shall be made at the discretion of the program
coordinator assigned by the District.
