Searching SciFinder Scholar Successfully SciFinder Scholar, the premier database for locating chemical literature, is available through computers in the library. It is not a web product that can be accessed from computers everywhere. To get to SciFinder, go to Start, to All Programs, [to Chemistry on some computers], to SciFinder Scholar 2007 Edition, and then to SciFinder Scholar (beside a diamond-shaped icon). Trinity is allowed only one user at a time; if you get a “busy signal” please try again later. For the Chemistry 2119 lab assignment, you will be doing a search under Explore > Explore Literature > Research Topic. Take your initial results and refine them to get an appropriate group of references, following these steps: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Click on Analyze/Refine at the bottom of the page. Click on Refine. Select Language; then choose English (or your preferred language). Repeat 1 and 2; select Document Type. Click in the Journal box. Repeat 1 and 2; select Publication Year. Type in the range of dates you want (e.g., 2006-2009) or just the starting date followed by a hyphen (2006-). 8. To get to journals published by the American Chemical Society (ACS), repeat 1. 9. Click on Analyze. 10. Click the circle beside Journal Name and click OK. 11. The results will be a list of journals. You are likely to see the following titles published by ACS: Journal of Organic Chemistry, Journal of the American Chemical Society, Organometallics, and Organic Letters. Click the boxes beside the ACS journal titles; then click on Get References. 12. On the results page, click on the microscope icon to get an abstract of an article. All ACS journals will be available in full text to Trinity users. To access the article itself, click on the page icon. You will be taken to ChemPort, from which you’ll be redirected to PDF and/or HTML links to your article. 13. For articles that are not available through ChemPort, you’ll be directed instead to a Trinity U. Library link, where there are options for searching the catalog or our list of journals, or for requesting the article through Interlibrary Loan. PLEASE EXIT SCIFINDER WHEN YOU’RE DONE! If you have problems using SciFinder Scholar or locating journal articles, contact Barbara MacAlpine, the science librarian, at X7343 or send email to bmacalpi@trinity.edu.
