Honors Biology http://tfd215.org/profiles/Angela_Germeraad_Profile/honorsbiology/ Email: agermeraad@tfd215.org Evolution and Classification Textbook Chapters: 17, 15, 16, 18 (for reference) Topics: o Theories of Darwin & Lamarck o Natural Selection o Earth History o Classification Unit Objectives: Describe the theory of evolution. Discuss the various forms of evidence for evolution. Summarize the major events in Earth's history. Describe how organisms are classified and where our classification system came from. Vocabulary: Charles Darwin evolution theory fossil artificial selection fitness/survival of the fittest adaptation natural selection descent with modification common descent homologous structure vestigial organ paleontologist fossil record extinct relative dating half-life radioactive dating geologic time scale era period macroevolution adaptive radiation convergent evolution co-evolution punctuated equilibrium taxonomy binomial nomenclature 1 A-Layer Evolution Discussion Panel 40 B-Layers **B#1: Natural Selection Activity **B#2: Aquaterra Habitat Activity **B#3: Genetic Drift/Hardy-Weinberg Activity **B#4: Alien Taxonomy **B#5: Cladograms/Dichotomous Keys Lab **B#6: Molecular Connection 10 10 15 15 10 10 C-Layers C#1: Fossil Dig C#2: History of Life Web Lesson C#3: Geologic Time Construct a poster (full-size) of the geologic eras (including a time scale with each period). Include pictures and labels to show major evolutionary events and the most important organisms that lived in that era; Create a newspaper story describing the major evolutionary events and the most important organisms that lived in that era. (must be in newspaper format) 17-1 and 17-3 Outline OR Assessment C#4: What Darwin Never Knew Video C#5: Charles Darwin/Natural Selection Develop a list of at least 5 examples of the biodiversity that Darwin observed. Write a brief newspaper article explaining the theory of evolution by natural selection for an audience who knows nothing about the subject. Include things about Darwin and what led him to his ideas. (must be in newspaper format) Create a concept map that summarizes Darwin’s Theory of Evolution and summarizes the contributions of other scientists to Darwin’s ideas about evolution. Construct a compare/contrast table listing similarities and differences between artificial and natural selection and give examples of each. 15-1 and 15-2 Outline OR Assessment 2 5 20 15 10 35 5 15 10 5 10 C#6: Patterns of Evolution Brainstorm and write down ways Earth might change over the next 1000 years. Select an organism living today and explain how it might evolve to adapt to the changes. Describe this in writing and make a sketch (with color) of specific adaptations in your organism. Label the adaptations the organism has, and why it is useful. Research the convergent evolution of marsupial and placental mammals. Create a poster (1/2 size) or type a min. 1-page paper that compares and contrasts examples of both. Must cite references. Make a table of the 6 patterns of macroevolution, describing each pattern and an example of each. Include a title for the table. Write a minimum 5 - 7 sentence paragraph explaining mass extinction and adaptive radiation and how the two are related. 15-3 and 17-4 Outline OR Assessment 15 15 10 5 10 C#7: Classification Write a minimum 5 - 7 sentence paragraph explaining why it is important to classify the diversity of living things. Write 10 sentence paragraph about two different species of bears, that illustrates binomial nomenclature. Cite all references used. Draw a cladogram of a manufactured item, such as a car, house-hold item, that has changed over the years. Label derived characters that appeared as new models arose. Research different organisms found in each kingdom. Sketch or use photos to create a poster (full-size) illustrating all the diversity found in each kingdom. Include names of organisms and must be in color Chapter 18 Assessment (1st page of assessment only) 5 10 10 15 10 C#8: Review Chapter 17, 15, 18 Standardized Test Prep Study Cards – use study guide on my webpage as a guide of what to include Make a study guide using the study guide on my webpage Make a 50 question quiz or worksheet w/ a separate answer key.
