GWI TO BROADCAST DEBATING COMPETITION FOR INTERNATIONAL WORLD
WATER DAY 2013 OBSERVANCE
-
Education to be focus of observance
Thursday, March 14 2012 – Georgetown, Guyana: Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI),
the nation’s supplier of water and sanitation services, will host a debating competition in
observance of International World Water Day 2013 (March 22) with the students of the School
of Earth and Environmental Sciences, University of Guyana, Turkeyen Campus.
On March 22, Guyana will join the rest of the World in observing International World Water
Day, an observance initiated by the United Nations General Assembly to focus on the
protection of freshwater resources. The 2013 observance is being held under the theme
“International Year of Water Cooperation”.
According to Hon. Minister of Housing and Water, Irfaan Ali, “I am pleased that Guyana Water
Inc. will continue its education thrust with a debating competition which will highlight the issue
of water resource management in Guyana”.
The Minister stated that this year’s WWD theme is appropriate since water resource
management is currently being discussed worldwide. He emphasized that there should be a
national focus on the need for all water users to cooperate in the interest of strategically
managing water resources with the overarching aim being to protect and conserve vital
freshwater resources. “I urge all Guyanese to view the broadcast of the debate as the
students will be highlighting vital points regarding integrated water resource management”
stated Minister Ali, “public education remains a priority as every GWI customer must be
responsible for water management.”
The International World Water Day Debating Competition will be broadcast on World Water
Day Friday March 22 from 19:00hours on the National Communications Network, NCN. A
series of school visits are also planned for the week of World Water Day as well as a prize
giveaway via the company’s official Facebook fan-page.
