MORNING WALKS
Rob SCOTT
01992 445288
Fifteen walkers braved the mud and rain in the first of 2015 walks; let's
hope that the sun shines on us for the rest of the year.
Our next walk will be on Tuesday 3rd February, starting at 10.00am as
normal and will be a circular one of 6.5 miles, starting from our parking
spot in Youngsbury Lane, Wadesmill (where we parked a couple of
months back next to The Feathers Inn). Stout walking boots or wellies
are advisable with the very wet weather we have had lately. We will head
across the A1170, to follow The Bourne for a couple of miles before
turning for Sacombe Green and Sacombe's St Catherine's Church. This
14th Century church was used as a location for the 2001 film Enigma
(about the Bletchley Park codebreakers). We will then continue along
some known footpaths back to Wadesmill.
From Cheshunt, head north on the A10 until just past Ware, where you
should turn left on to the A1170 signed Ware, Wadesmill and Thundridge.
My mobile, in case of problems is 075944 27190.

SOCIAL HISTORY
Carole BATTER 01707 879773
As part of our Christmas celebration and first planning meeting, Keith,
landlord of the Green Dragon, was able to supply us with the History – as
far as he is able to learn – of the Green Dragon when it was the Spanish
Ambassador’s servant’s quarters before it became a coaching inn (the
Ambassador’s residence was next door in what is now part of the
Council’s offices). On February 3rd the group will be visiting the recently
restored Forty Hall for a personal tour by ‘Sir Nicholas Rainton’ (a leading
merchant of the City of London, who built the Hall) to tell of the lives and
times in the 17th century. In March we shall be visiting Copped Hall to
learn of the on-going restoration works taking place. The group’s next
planning meeting is Tuesday 10th February at 11.15 in the Green Dragon.

WATERCOLOUR GROUP
Sid KING
01992 711617
Currently full, but Watercolour and Other Mediums, run by Maureen
HAMILTON has places.
WATERCOLOUR and OTHER MEDIUMS Maureen HAMILTON
01707 872611
I have started the new art group which is mainly water colours, but which I
hope to develop so that other mediums; oil, acrylic, pastel and pen and ink,
can become part of the class. I run two classes per month on the second
and fourth week and the class is beginning to grow. I coach and give a
demonstration at times so if there is anybody out there who has secret
desires to put brush to paper, please give me a ring - I have the rent to pay!
Most of the people in the class are beginners. I am thinking of making up a
party of people who would be interested in meeting up to do some outside
sketching at some desirable location during the summer. So if anyone is
interested, please let me know. We meet from10.30/12.00noon, in the
Garden room, Wolsey Hall, every 2nd and 4th Wednesday monthly.
BARRIES FINANCIAL FORUM
I recently applied on line for renewal of my E111, the European Health Insurance
Card. I was aware of bogus websites that charge for this service which is FREE. I
therefore took care and chose a website with .ORG in the title. I realised I had been
deceived when a demand for payment appeared. This same scam operates on a
number of sites such as Car tax renewals, Income tax etc. The moral of the story is to
be very careful when going on line to official sites.
National Savings are now selling the “Over 65 Bonds”. Interest rates are 2.8% for 1
year bonds and 4% for 3 year bonds. Not a brilliant rate but better than Banks and
Building Societies are giving you.
BOOKSTALL, PUZZLES & RAFFLE
If you wish to donate books and puzzles to help raise funds please bring them along
to the monthly meeting. A raffle for valuable prizes will also be held at each monthly
meeting. **** TOP PRIZE NOW £40***
