DLAR Laboratory Animal Training Program Instructions
Training is important for the appropriate care and use of laboratory animals. It is mandated by the Animal
Welfare Act (9 CFR Chapter 1, Subchapter A, Subpart C, Section 2.32). All researchers are required to
participate in laboratory animal training program in order to receive access to the animal facilities of NYU
School of Medicine/Medical Center.
GUIDELINES TO ACCESS THE ANIMAL FACILITIES – All new Applicants
for Skirball (SCAF), Dental (DCAF), Parasitology (PCAF), Sloan Kettering (MSCAF),
Varick (VCAF) , Satellite Animal Facilities, Sterling Forest (DEMSAF) and Alexandria ( ERSP)
The orientation includes a brief overview of NYUSoM Animal Facilities, the laws and regulations pertaining
to animal research, information on animal ordering, DLAR husbandry services, DLAR veterinary services,
Guide to Occupational Health and Safety, the availability and charges for special services, and per diem
rates. Any questions pertinent to specific animal research programs in the investigator's laboratory are
addressed at this time.
Please follow the steps below:
1.
Obtain an ID card:
a. an NYU Langone Medical Center ID is needed for SCAF, PCAF, DEMSAF, VCAF and
Smilow and Skirball Satellites.
b. an NYU Dental School ID is needed for DCAF at Washington Square,
c. a Sloan Kettering/MSCAF ID is needed at MSKCC. For information, refer to DLAR’s
website at www.med.nyu.edu/dlar, see Memorial Sloan-Kettering Animal Facility on
the home page. You will need to login with your Kerberos ID and password for access
to the website.
d. an Alexandria/ERSP ID is obtained thru Mispro Biotech, please email:
kenneth.jones@misprobiotech.com
The Principal Investigator (PI) or Lab Manager can assist the new research staff to obtain an ID
card from respective facility sites.
2. Obtain a Kerberos ID: Contact MCIT Helpdesk at 212-263-6868. Employees are issued a
Kerberos ID upon starting a job at NYULMC. The PI or the Lab Manager can assist in obtaining
the Kerberos ID. Kerberos ID and its password are needed to perform CITI web-based animal
training.
3. Submission of Forms: Bring the completed forms to the Skirball Animal Facility
Supervisor’s office (ground floor of Skirball building). See page 6 and 7 of this packet.

All “Forms”” must be submitted together. Deadline for submission is the Monday on the week
of DLAR orientation at 3 pm. Once the forms are submitted, the Training Coordinator will
review the forms for proper completion and email the applicants to confirm their attendance to
the IACUC/DLAR lecture orientation.

4. Any researchers may attend the orientation prior to protocol approval, but a tour is
given ONLY after receiving the approval. Please contact IACUC regarding protocols:

Attend the IACUC/DLAR orientation: This lecture starts promptly at 9 am and ends at
10:30 am. In general, regulations on the conduct of animal research, the role of the
IACUC, care and use of lab animals in the facility will be presented. All participants are
encouraged to arrive at the lecture room prior to 9:00 a.m. There are no late admittance.

5. Any researchers may complete the CITI web-based animal training module, instruction
is below. Please contact IACUC regarding CITI: iacuc@nyumc.org
Complete the required CITI web-based animal training module.
INSTRUCTION: Go to Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI)
https://www.citiprogram.org/Default.asp
Use NYU School of Medicine/NYU Langone Medical Center as your affiliate institution (Do
not use NYU). The system requires you to use your Kerberos ID and password associated with
it. Contact CITI (Helpdesk 305-243-7970), if problems occur. All researchers MUST take the
web animal training mandatory courses (modules) as follows:
A. Complete the MANDATORY COURSES for all Researchers
1. “Working with the IACUC”
2. “Species-Specific Module”
Researchers will select species- specific modules depending on which lab
animals are to be used, e.g. working with Frogs, Toads or other Amphibians,
Mice, Rats, Hamsters, Gerbils, Guinea Pigs, Rabbits, Dogs, Swine or Pigs , Nonhuman primates , etc.
3. “Minimizing Pain and Distress”. ALL users are required to complete this
module.
B. If researchers are conducting survival surgery on MAMMALS, “Aseptic Surgery”
module is required.
C. For IACUC members ONLY, please complete “Essentials for IACUC members
course”
D. OPTIONAL Refresher Course: “Working With Animals in Biomedical Research”

6. Attend the hands-on training: This is required for applicants who have no experience or
limited experience in handling mice, rats, guinea pigs, hamsters, rabbits and other species
of lab animals. Those who have signified experience for a year or more may not attend
the hands-on training, unless the applicant voluntarily expresses intention to attend as a
refresher-training. The regular schedule of hands-on training usually occurs on the Friday

of orientation week. Take note that hands-on training is required before a minor
amendment of the research protocol can be approved by the IACUC. Only personnel
included as Protocol Associates in an approved research protocol can access the animal
facility, and therefore, are required to have a tour of the animal facility.
“Rodent Biomethodology” hands-on training workshop
1. Refer to the schedule below.
2. Register for a particular date.
3. Confirmation will be emailed to the applicant once it is received.
4. Applicants can also email the Training Coordinator (cortec03@nyumcorg) to follow-up
on the schedule.

Time: 1:30-2:30 pm
Location: 11th Floor of Dental Animal Facility.
The building is located along 1st Avenue between 24th and 25th street. The main
entrance is on 24th street. Upon entering the main lobby, you will find 4 elevators, take
the SL (sublevel) elevator by going downstairs to the sub-level. This is an an express
elevator and will only stop twice, on the 6th and on the 11th floor. Get off on 11th floor ,
turn LEFT, then turn RIGHT and turn LEFT, you will see a door. Knock on the door or call
the DLAR office at 212-998-9982, this door will be opened for you. You may also take
any of the 3 elevators in the lobby, but it will stop on each floor.

7. Tour the animal facility: A tour will be given after all the above is completed and only
after the researcher’s name is added to the approved protocol.
Applicants are encouraged to follow-up on the approval of the research protocol thru
their PIs and Lab Managers, then, contact the respective Facility Supervisors once the
protocol is approved, to attend the tour of the facility. The Training Coordinator and
Facility Supervisors with IACUC validation, will countercheck each approved protocol in
order for the applicants to participate on the tour.

& education, required orientation & tour, applicants should bring a copy of the checklist
for the tour.

a. For Sloan (MSCAF) tour, email: abdoul.fall@nyumc.org
Sloan access will be coordinated thru the DLAR Operations Manager
(brian.imperiale@nyumc.org), refer to DLAR homepage Memorial Sloan Animal
Facility for detailed instruction.
b. For Skirball (SCAF) tour, email: Lillian.rodriguez@nyumc.org, users will bring the
Animal Facility Access Form signed by the Facility Supervisor after the tour, to
MSB 182, Security Office for activation of ID card.
c. For Dental (DCAF) tour, email: frank.mercogliano@nyumc.org
Dental access will be arranged by DLAR Operations Manager, DLAR Operations
Manager (brian.imperiale@nyumc.org) after the tour with Washington Square
Security.
d. For Parasitology (OPH), Satellites, and Varick (VCAF), email:
frank.mercogliano@nyumc.org, users will bring the Animal Facility Access Form
signed by the Facility Supervisor after the tour to MSB 182, Security Office for
activation of ID card.
e. For Sterling Forest (DEMSAF), email Dr. Tchou-Wong: Kam-Meng.TchouWong@nyumc.org

Note: Email or contact the Supervisors/Managers regarding a Tours ONLY when your protocol has
been approved and your name was added.
Facility tours are only routinely scheduled for rodent users as stated above. If you are working
with a different species, contact the Training Coordinator for an appointment. Prior to a tour for
a different species, the animal users must have their names included in an approved IACUC
protocol, and will be arranged by the Facility Supervisor/Training Coordinator. Follow up the
approval of the protocol with your PI or Lab Manager. IACUC usually sends an approval letter
from a minor amendment of the protocol.

Activate your ID card
Following the facility tour, the Training Coordinator or Facility Supervisor will sign the Security
Access Form for access into an animal facility, the researcher will need to go to the Security
Office located at MSB 182 to activate their ID card or as instructed by the Operations Manager.
Security is in charge of your access into the animal facility and DLAR is in charge of your access
into the animal room. Depending on the facility, a PIN code will be inputted into the DLAR
security system by the Facility Supervisor for this purpose.
Request to Change Animal Facility or Changing PI
Contact the Training Coordinator for detailed instruction and schedule of tour. Fill-out Animal
Facility Security Access Form, with the PI’s signature. Schedule tour with Supervisor via email,
bring this form to the tour. The Facility Supervisor or Training Coordinator will contact you to
schedule. If you have attended the orientation prior to November of 2011, from the date of
request, your application will be treated as a New Applicant.
DLAR Seminars
Applicants are encouraged to participate in DLAR Seminars. Topics include: Rodent Breeding 101
and 102, and Aseptic Rodent Surgery Techniques.
