- drawing activity: sketch out ahupua`a parts
- intro to map of Nanakuli Ahupua`a and history (w/ guest speaker)
- chant of Nanakuli Ahupua`a: learn sit down hula with stones (guest presenters)
- intro how to write a haiku with example of 3 line (5/7/5 syllables)
Aug 16-19 – Intro to Limu (Seaweed) & Kumulipo
- reading/listening to Kumulipo chant and creation of island life
- intro to different types of limu
- Native Hwn. Grant Assessment

Aug 23-27 – Classifying Limu & Simple Sea Life
Mon – SSR: choice; complete assessment if needed; & Measurement (metric volumes)

Tue – SSR: Seaweeds; complete Limu Cards; Teacher Lecture: Naming Limu; Optional:
students make Hwn./Western Sci. Limu Chart; add western sci. names to Limu Cards
Thu – SSR: Phosphorus “Goo”; Teacher Discussion: intro to elements, phosphorus (P) &
compound H2O; Optional: students try to draw wai (2 hydrogen + 1 oxygen) and kai
(2 H + 0 + Na + Cl); Teacher Lecture: classifying by sea life in Kumulipo chant by
scientific kingdoms etc; give out 9/23 field trip permission forms to return by 9/16
Sept. 1-3 – Intro to the Scientific Method and PH Scale
Thu – SSR; Lab with teacher or presenter: purpose (to find if mystery solutions are acids,
bases, & what PH), research (PH scale etc explained), hypothesis (PH paper will do
what?), experiment (record observations), analysis (use PH scale to determine
acid/base), conclusion (write up report); Optional: groups present findings to class
Sept. 7-10 – Intro Term Project & Group Lab Practice using Scientific Method
Tue – SSR; teacher intros project (student-made map to scale; analysis of water sample
data collected on field trip; identify limu at trip site; observations at site – ie litter,
fish, etc; group presentation to class); teacher guided Rubric Planning Discussion
with class; Optional: measurement activity (metric liquids)
Thu – guest presenters (Matt & Kevin f/ Alu Like) direct Lab: teams of 2-3 students
(observer, note-taker, safety/material mgr.) conduct own water lab (1 experiment each
group, such as: breaking down H2O, chemical action/reaction with water & semiliquid, states of H2O matter, solute/solvent/solution); students write up using
Scientific Method
Sept. 13-17 – Intro
Mon – SSR; & Measurement/Map-Making to Scale exercise
Tue – SSR; students complete and present Lab reports to class
Thu – SSR; Guest Speaker from HECO &/or video of coastal marine life; hand in all
field trip permission forms
Sept. 20-24 – Field Trip: Water Testing & Limu Observation in Wai‘anae Moku
Mon.– SSR; & Measurement/estimating distances in the field exercise
Tue – SSR; prep for field trip (how to use water sampling kit, record data, take
measurements, observe site, safety, etc)
Thu – trip with Donna K. & kupuna Uncle Walter in 2 groups at 2 sites each along moku
from Nanakuli to Maili
Sept. 27-Oct. 1 – Students Present 4 Waiana`e Moku Reports
Mon– SSR; Measurement exercise to review scale when making map &/or metric
measurements
Tue – SSR; class preps project materials & presentations
Thu – SSR; class presents projects
