Technician position at the Computational Genomics Group, at the University of Crete The Computational Genomics Group (CG2) at the University of Crete (Herakleion, Greece) is looking for motivated young undergraduates to work on a project lying at the interface of genomics, genome evolution and machine learning. Work will include the technical support of and data analysis for a computational genomics project co-funded by the European Union and National Funds under the framework of plan "Aristeia II". The project extends in various facets of computational biology ranging from algorithm development and optimization, database management and modeling of gene expression and genome arhitecture evolution. The ideal candidate should hold a MSc preferably in Bioinformatics/Computational Biology or alternatively in Informatics/Computer Science with a proven focus on computational genomics. Expertise in big data analysis and database management are desirable qualities. Knowledge of molecular biology, genomics and evolution is to be considered a plus. Candidates should have good oral and written communication skills in English, as well as excellent organisation and resource management skills. Minimal requirements include strong computational/programming skills alongside: • System Administration skills • Experience in database development and management of (under MySQL or similar frameworks) • Excellent knowledge of scripting languages such as Perl/Python • Strong experience with statistical programming languages such as R, Matlab/Octave Experience with Next Generation Sequencing Data Analysis/Gene expression Analysis is highly preferable. The expected starting date is early 2014. Initial appointment is for 2 years with the possibility of extension. Highly motivated candidates may carry on into a PhD candidacy prior to the end of the term provided appropriate funding extension is obtained.
