University of the Peloponnese
School of Fine Arts
Department of Theatre Studies
Study Programme 2011-2012
The department of Theatre Studies of the School of Fine Arts of the University of the
Peloponnese aims at the theoretical and practical training of students in the art of
theatre. Combining theatre practice with scientific methodology it supplies students
with the necessary qualifications for an artistic or scientific career in theatre.
The Programme Study is four years, organized in eight semesters. The first two years
the students acquire basic background in theatre studies while the final two years they
choose a specialization and attend courses of more focused interests. The
specializations offered in the department are as follows:
1. Theatre Studies
2. Performing Arts
The Study Programme consists of 48 courses, each of which is taught three hours per
week. Additionally, students are required to write a Final Year Thesis, which
corresponds to and may be replaced by four elective courses of the third and fourth
years. Courses are distinguished into compulsory and electives. The department
offers a total of 36 compulsory courses and 12 electives or 16 electives, if the students
choose not to write a Thesis. In the first two years the department offers 28
compulsory courses, which provide basic training in theatre theory and practice.
During the first two years students, may, if they so desire, take up to two elective
courses of the third and fourth years, so as to prepare in advance for the
specializations of the final two years. In the third and fourth years students take 20
courses, 8 of which are compulsory offers within each specialization and 12 are
electives (or 16 electives if a student does not opt to write a thesis). Students may
choose electives either from the pool of elective courses of the third and fourth years
or from the compulsory courses offered by the other specializations in the department.
Finally, in the third and fourth years, students also undertake ‘practical training’
which is organized in collaboration with cultural or educational institutions outside
the university (as part of our internship or work-placement programme). Practical
training is equivalent to two (2) elective courses.
On the basis of the student work load, each of the theory courses of the first two years
carries 4 ECTS credits. The introductory courses to performing arts carry 5 ECTS
credits, on account of the combination of theory with artistic practice. The ‘Research
Methodology’ course carries 6 ECTS, as students are required to work on a lengthy
assignment and the syllabus of this course also includes acquaintance with
information technology at a basic level (e.g. learning to use Microsoft Office or
learning to access electronic resources and archives). As part of the basic education
and training programme of the first two years, students are also required to take two
semesters of language courses (French, *Italian or Spanish) which correspond to 8
ECTS credits.
The specialization courses of the final two years (3rd and 4th year compulsory and
electives) carry 5 ECTS credits each, as they require challenging paper assignments or
the undertaking of artistic work. In the final semester of their studies students may
choose the elective course ‘Theatre Production II’ which aims at the preparation and
presentation of a theatre production. The course requires the interaction between
theoretical and practical theatre courses, promoting a synthesis of theory and practice,
which is a basic aim of the department.
In sum, the undergraduate degree in Theatre Studies totals 240 ECTS credits (30
ECTS credits per semester). Therefore the department’s Programme of Studies is on
a par with all other European undergraduate study programmes of four years.
