POLICY & PROCEDURE MANUAL
SUBJECT: MANDATORY EDUCATION
POLICY:
It is the policy of the Public Health Trust (PHT) to ensure a safe environment and provide
quality care by meeting prescribed education requirements. Each department is
responsible for ensuring that all employees in that department receive education/training
as mandated by regulatory and accrediting agencies and the PHT. Agencies include,
but are not limited to: The Joint Commission and the Agency for Health Care
Administration (AHCA).
PROCEDURE:
1. Each department will develop, implement, and monitor compliance with, record and
report on education/training programs which relate to mandatory education. The
educational methodology can be varied to reflect the needs of the department (i.e.,
self-directed, interactive, one-on-one, or any combination).
2. All PHT employees are required to complete all Annual Mandatory Education as
assigned.



Risk Management
Personnel involved in providing patient care and those directed by
department/manager that have direct patient/client contact will be certified in the
techniques of CPR on a biennial basis, following the American Heart Association
(AHA) guidelines. Personnel include, but not limited to Nurses, Physician HouseStaff, Patient Care Associates, Patient Care Technicians, Nursing Assistants,
Medical Assistants, Community Hospital Specialists (JSCH), Dental Assistants,
Occupational Therapists and Technicians, Physical Therapists and Technicians,
Respiratory Therapists and Technicians, Transporters, Radiology Technicians, and
Security.
KEYPOINT: Departments will identify employees whose job
responsibilities specify the need for completing the AHA BLS Healthcare
Provider Course and those who may need to become an AHA BLS
Instructor.

Mandatory classes which may be required, but not on an annual basis, will be
announced throughout the JHS and added to the Learning Management System
(LMS) for appropriate employees.
4.
Mandatory classes which are discipline/department or unit specific must be
identified, provided, and attended. Each discipline/Department is responsible for
providing these specific classes.
5.
It is the responsibility of health care professionals to attend all classes required
by their licensing board. The classes may or may not be provided by the
Jackson Health System.
6.
All mandatory education program lesson plans must be approved by the
Hospital-Wide Resource Profession/Department responsible for that program,
i.e.:
Stroke Alert Team
Stroke Education
Compliance
General Compliance Training
HIPAA
Quality and Patient Safety
Use of Restraints
Risk Management and Environmental Health and Safety Department
Fire Safety
Disaster Procedures
Safe Handling of Hazardous Materials
Risk Management
Infection Prevention
Infection Control
Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure
Education and Development
Population-specific Healthcare
7.
Lesson plans for generic mandatories will be kept on file by the Department of
Education and Development. Discipline/Department/Unit Specific lesson plans
will be kept on file by the Discipline/Department/ Educator.
8.
Documentation of attendance at mandatory education classes must be
maintained.

9.
All part-time personnel will attend annual mandatory education classes offered
within their base Hospital Center/Department.
10.
Education records of regular, full & part-time employees and temporary relief and
pool personnel will be maintained in the Hospital Center/Department where they
are based.
11.
An annual report of the percent of compliance in completing mandatory
education must be submitted to the appropriate Vice President/designee and to
the Administrator, Education and Development by January 20th each year.
Education and Development will submit a hospital-wide report to the Executive
Safety Committee by April 1st each year.
12.
An annual review of mandatory requirements will be conducted by the
Department of Education and Development.
13.
Employees who fail to complete annual mandatory education requirements as
required will be suspended immediately and not permitted to work.
