Next, please. Norie Matsuzaka.
Norie
Good afternoon, everyone. I would like to tell you about my trip to Canada last year. I went
on a homestay visit to Vancouver for three weeks last summer, with my best friend, Emi. It
was one of the most exciting times in my life. I liked it because I had the chance to speak
English every day.

It took nine hours to fly from Narita Airport to Vancouver. We were really tired when we
arrived, but we were very excited, too. It was the first time that I had left Japan, so I was a
little nervous. I was worried that I wouldn’t understand the signs at the airport. And I didn’t
know my host family. Could I speak to them? Would they understand me?
Everything was fine. My host family was very kind to me. It was difficult to speak English
at first, but I was more confident every day. My host mother, Mrs. Clark, asked me
questions about Japan. She asked me about Japanese food, about my family and home, and
about my school. She wants to visit Japan one day because she thinks our culture is so
interesting! I was so happy when she said that.
So I tried my best. It was a good experience for me to travel and see the world. At first, I
didn’t think I would enjoy it, because I am shy. However, I loved visiting Canada, because
the people I met were so friendly and kind. It is a beautiful country. Sometimes it was a
little strange to be in a different culture, but I had a great time. I did it! And you can do it,
too. So, if you have the chance, you should travel to another country. You may surprise
yourself!
Thank you very much.

It was nice to hear about your trip, Norie.
Norie
Thank you!
Tim
And I know what you mean! When I arrived in Japan, I was nervous because it was my
first trip to Asia.
Norie
Yes. The first time overseas, everything seems so different, don’t you think?
Tim
You’re right. But then you start to get used to it. And then you can have fun.
Norie
That’s true. I had a good time, because I made new friends.
Tim
It sounds great!
Unit 14 Could you tell me about your English courses?

Receptionist Good morning. Can I help you?
Emi
Yes, please. I’m from Japan, and I’m on vacation. I may want to study English here in
Florida next year. Could you tell me about your English language program, please?
Receptionist Sure. We run language courses all year, and you can join at any time. We have students
here from thirty different countries from all over the world – including Brazil, Columbia,
Korea, Taiwan, and of course Japan.
Emi
Oh, that’s good!
Receptionist But we try to make sure you are in a class with many different nationalities, so that you
speak English in class.
Emi
I see. How many students are there in a class?
Receptionist Between eight and twelve students.
Emi
Oh, great.

Could you tell me about accommodations?
Yes. We can arrange homestay accommodations for you. You can stay with a local family.
OK. I would like to find out about the conversation classes. How long are the courses?
We run short intensive courses for just one week or two weeks; there are exam classes
which run for a whole year; or you can study for one semester only. It depends what time
of year you arrive, how long you’ll stay in the States, what interests you, and so on.
That’s a lot of information!
Yes, I know. I’ll give you the website address for our school, and you can find all the
course information there. Are you in a hurry today?
No, not really.
Why don’t you take a few minutes to look around the school now? After that, you can ask
more questions, if you want to.
Thank you! I will.
I’ll ask one of the teachers to show you around …

Certainly. The course runs from May 10th to July 10th. The brochure has information
about all the classes as well as accommodations.
I see. Which level is the course for?
It’s for all levels. Would you like to take an application form with you?
Yes, please. Thank you for your help.

Australia is great. I really want to live here!

Well, you can. Lots of Japanese people live here on the Gold Coast.

Yeah, I know. But I would miss my family and friends.
Mark
Well, I really want to travel after I finish high school.
Hideaki
Oh. Aren’t you going to go to university?
Mark
I don’t know. Probably.

Well, if you come to Japan, I’ll show you around!

If I get good grades, I’ll go to college. But I want to travel around the world first.
It’s expensive to travel.
You can work and travel at the same time.
Well, you can. If you come to Japan, you can teach English.
Well if you want to live in Australia, you can teach Japanese!
Oh, no. I don’t think I’d be a good teacher!
No, I wouldn’t either!
What do you want to do then? I mean, your job?
I haven’t decided yet. Something to do with water sports. If I get rich, I’ll have my own
diving company.
That sounds really cool.
But I don’t really know what I want to be, yet.

something like that.
Mark
Cool.
Hideaki
And if I work hard, maybe I’ll make enough money to travel again next year.
Mark
And then maybe we can meet up in China for a vacation!
Hideaki
That would be great!
