When students come across words that they don’t know, it is important to have a variety of
skills to determine the meaning of a word. These skills are:
 context clues – reading the sentence over and checking for clues “around” the word
 word structure – sound out the word, look for the root word or any other hints
 apposition – the meaning or definition is given in the sentence, set
