STRATEGIES TO FIND WORD MEANINGS 1. Divide a compound word into the words that make it up. 2. Divide a long word into syllables and sound it out. 3. Use the sentence structure to find the meaning of a word. 4. Look for a context clue. (See graphic organizer below.) 5. Plug in other words to substitute for the unknown word. 6.
