Appendix To check the quality of nitrogen input data derived from the database of this study, we compiled chemical and total nitrogen application data from Chinese monographs, conference reports and peer-reviewed journals. S1-5 showed seasonal chemical and total nitrogen application rates in rice paddies in China in the 1950s-1990s. The chemical and total nitrogen inputs compiled from the literatures were, on average, comparable to those derived from the database of this study (Table 3). The history information of water regime and the proportion of organic nitrogen to the total N input in rice paddies reported in the literatures were shown in Table 3, also fairly consistent with those estimated in this study.
