Chinhoyi University of Technology is a unique community of scholars comprising staff and students dedicated to education and creation of knowledge. The University strives to be a centre of excellence in higher education. We seek to be an effective research-intensive University. Graduate studies are the hallmark of a research-intensive university. This is the raison d’être for the establishment of this Directorate of Graduate Studies. We are responsible for the creation of an enabling environment to support and promote graduate studies in the University. Our founding remit is to serve as the epicentre for graduate studies at CUT. We support Schools/Institutes in the design, delivery and administration of both coursework- and research-based graduate programmes. To this end we are cognisant of the fact that academic departments are the custodians of graduate programmes. Our role is to complement and support academic departments. We support graduate studies in ways that foster a culturally and intellectually challenging environment characterised by high quality academic standards. Our Mission To administer and coordinate graduate programmes in all our niche academic areas so as to produce well-rounded graduates with desirable academic, professional and cultural attributes. Our Functions Our main functions are administration and coordination of graduate studies in the University. This is achieved through the following: Oversight of development of graduate programmes Marketing and publicity of graduate programmes Formulation and administration of graduate studies policies Recruitment of students Providing support services to students Budgeting and resource mobilisation for graduate programmes Proving fundamental grant management and guidance services Providing registrarial services along the graduate-training value chain Promoting quality assurance and enhancement in graduate studies [LINK 2] ABOUT US The Directorate of Graduate Studies is the coordinating office for all matters related to graduate studies at Chinhoyi University of Technology. We serve as the principal resource centre for staff and students on matters relating to graduate programmes and degree requirements, degree status, petition procedures, thesis and dissertation preparation, final examinations and academic standing. [LINK 4] MASTERS DEGREE PROGRAMMES Chinhoyi University of Technology currently offers three taught masters degree programmes. The taught masters programmes are: Master of Science in Post Harvest Science and Technology Masters in Business Intelligence Master of Science in Strategic Management (The programmes links must be clickable) Mode of Delivery All the three programmes are run on a Block-Release model. In this mode of delivery, courses are not spread out over a semester but are offered in a ‘block’. The courses are offered in a very condensed time, usually one to two weeks. General Academic Regulations for Taught Masters Programmes (This must be a clickable link) [LINK 5] GRADUATE RESEARCH PROGRAMMES The University offers higher degrees by research. These are the: Master of Philosophy programmes (MPhil) Doctor of Philosophy programmes (DPhil) Higher degrees by research are assessed on the basis of a thesis or dissertation produced at the end of a research project conducted by the student. Students receive guidance from a team of supervisors who have expertise in the research field. Higher degrees by research are available on a full-time and part-time basis. To ensure that our students are well-grounded in the discipline of their study, the University requires research students to take identified core courses offered in the University or outside the University. To ensure that our students are well-rounded, the University offers mandatory seminars to graduate students designed to build specific competences among our students. The seminar series cover the following areas: Academic prose and presentation skills E-literacy and digital technologies Management and organisational skills Multi-cultural skills Duration of Programmes The normal duration of programmes are as follows: Full-time Part-time Minimum 2 years 3 years Maximum 4 years 6 years Minimum 3 years 4 years Maximum 6 years 8 years Master of Philosophy: Doctor of Philosophy: Guidelines These guidelines provide general information for both MPhil and DPhil studies. Guidelines and Procedures for Higher Degrees by Research Guidelines for MPhil and DPhil Concept Notes Guidelines for Examination of MPhil/DPhil Theses Progress Report Form [LINK 6] ADMISSIONS & REGISTRATION For coursework-based programmes (mainly master’s programmes) the requirements for admission are specified in the programmes regulations. (See programme regulations). For higher degrees by research the generic admission process is described by the flowchart below. Upon acceptance of a research concept note by the Departmental Board and approval by the School/ Institute Higher Degrees Committee (SIHDC), the candidate is asked to submit a research concept note, a completed application form, and a copy of certificates and transcripts for highest level of qualification to the Deputy Registrar (Academic) for registration. A research concept note allows us to check how well the candidate understands the research process and to make sure the topic is within the research agenda of the University. The research topic must be within the expertise of one of our staff members. The topic must have academic merit and it must be capable of generating new knowledge. The research concept note should: Summarise what the research is about and say why it is important , making reference to current literature Identify provisional research questions Suggest how the questions can be investigated The research concept note must be written in your own words. DO NOT copy text from published books and articles. This is considered plagiarism and will lead to automatic rejection of your application. [LINK 7] FUNDING & FEES Chinhoyi University of Technology offers numerous internal opportunities for graduate research student funding including funding for graduate research programmes. This is mainly reserved for staff development fellowships and in some cases external candidates are also considered for these studentships. We also provide advice on applying for external scholarships and awards.
