I. ABOUT THE COLLABORATIVE a.

The Michigan Social Work Continuing Education Collaborative (referred to as the Collaborative) is not governed by NASW-Michigan. NASW-Michigan is the administrative arm for the Collaborative and is a paying provider with the Collaborative along with all of the other organizations and

Universities represented on the Collaborative. b.

The Collaborative approves social work continuing education courses on behalf of the Michigan

Board of Social Work. c.

NASW-Michigan is not the approving body of continuing education applications. d.

NASW-Michigan is not the Michigan Board of Social Work. e.

The Michigan Social Work Continuing Education Collaborative approves courses, not providers. A

“Provider” is the same as a course sponsor. f.

Unlimited Providers pay an annual fee to that allows them to submit an unlimited number of applications for review by the Collaborative. Any organization, company or school can opt to be and Unlimited Provider. g.

Initially course providers are never granted “unlimited” approval. Unlimited providers are allowed

“unlimited” submissions each 12 month period. All courses must be reviewed and approved for social work continuing education.

II. h.

Social Workers earn continuing education clock or contact hours (CE Hours) not CME credits or CEU credits. One CE Hour is equivalent to 50-60 minutes of uninterrupted instruction. The first hour of every workshop must be at least 60 minutes or uninterrupted instruction.

MICHIGAN RULES REGARDING CE APPLICATION/DOCUMENTATION REQUIREMENTS.

All providers must keep a one complete copy of the following documents for a minimum of five

years. Digital records are acceptable. a.

One complete copy of each submitted continuing education application. b.

One complete copy of the presenter’s Curriculum Vitae or resume. c.

Copies of all participant registrations. d.

Copies of the signed attendance records or attendance monitor sheets. e.

One complete copy of all hand outs and presentation materials (e.g. power points). f.

Copies of the participant evaluations and an evaluation summary.

III. PROVIDER AGREES TO: a.

Distribute to each social work participant and presenter a certificate of attendance with the following information: i.

Number of CE Hours Earned (As assigned in the approval statement that is emailed to you). iv.

MICEC Approval Statement (Collaborative approval statement is emailed to you upon approval of your course application) vi.

Course Sponsor’s Name – This must be the same sponsor name that is on the CE

Policy for presenter CE credits:

 (b) Three (3) continuing education contact hours may be earned for each 60-minute presentation of an approved continuing education program that is not part of the licensee’s regular job description that complies with the licensure standards for CE

Rules in R338.2908o. Credit may be earned for the same program only once in each renewal period. A maximum of 15 continuing education contact hours may be earned under this subdivision.

 Failure to include all of the required information on the certificates could result in a suspended license and fines for any social worker who gets audited by the State of Michigan. b.

Courses submitted for CE’s must be relevant to social work practice and in accordance with at least one of the following requirements: (see social work continuing education general rules and definitions R338.2901)

Courses that do not meet at least one of these requirements will not be reviewed. i.

Theories and concepts of human behavior in the social environment ii.

Social work practice, knowledge and skills iii.

Social work research, program evaluation or practice evaluation iv.

Social work agency management or administration v.

vi.

Development, evaluation and/or implementation of social policy

Social work ethics and standards of professional practice (Presenter must be a licensed SW) vii.

Pain/Pain symptom management, including but not limited to, behavior management, psychology of pain, behavior modification and stress management as it relates to physical pain. c.

You must have a licensed social worker involved in the planning and/or presentation of all programs/workshops offered for social work continuing education clock hours.

d.

You must answer all of the questions on the application. If you cannot answer all of the questions on the application then it is most likely that your event (presentation) is not relevant to social work practice. e.

Your submission of the application is acknowledgement that you have read and understand the rules of application as outlined in this manual and that you agree to:

I certify that all of the programs offered by :__( course sponsor /provider) ______will comply with the rules of public act 61, 2004 (senate bill 189) and the Michigan Social Work Continuing

Education Collaborative. Documentation of compliance for each program approved by the collaborative will be maintained for five years and will be made available to the Collaborative upon request. It is understood that the continuing education files may be audited for a compliance check at any time during this five year period.

V. CONTINUING EDUCATION APPLICATON REVIEW BY THE COLLABORATIVE a.

Collaborative members are volunteers. b.

They are assigned reviews on a rotating monthly basis. c.

Reviews are emailed out to the Collaborative members as they are received. d.

Reviews of the application content are based on the Continuing Education Rubric that was established as a review guideline for evaluation consistency based on the social work continuing education general rules. See the Continuing Education Rubric-Table 1A. e.

Applications are reviewed on a first come-first serve basis unless a “rush” review has been requested and the “rush” application fee has been paid. f.

Reviews are not processed until all required documentation and fees have been submitted.

BEFORE YOU SEND US YOUR APPLICATION:

1.

If you are sending your application via regular mail please make sure that all of the documents required for the application are mailed together in one packet.

2.

The application and all supporting documents must either be all one-sided or all two-sided. Do not mix the two.

3.

Remove all staples

4.

Do not send in your application until you have all of the required documents.

5.

Do not email the application and then send a duplicate in the mail.

6.

If you email your application you will need to follow up with the CE office to make sure that the application packet was received.

7.

Incomplete applications will not be processed.

8.

Make sure that you include your check or have made payment arrangements with the

Collaborative office.

9.

Approvals and denials will all be communicated via email.

VI. PROVIDER APPLICATION DEFINITIONS

Non-Profit Organization: Any organization that is considered a non-profit by Federal Tax Standards.

For-Profit Organization: Any organization that is considered a for-profit entity by Federal Tax Standards.

Course Sponsor – Provider: This is the organization that is sponsoring the continuing education offering and the organization responsible for the maintenance of all continuing education records, requirements and payment for application. The course sponsor/provider name must remain consistent on all documentation.

Course/Workshop Title: The title of the presentation must match the title that you will be putting on the certificates of attendance.

Course Description: The description must be brief and it should match the objectives given.

Course Objectives: This should match the course description-what is it that the presentation is trying to teach attendees.

ADA-Americans with Disabilities Act: You must provide us with a contact at your organization that can accommodate any learning needs for your event (example: being able to hire a sign language interpreter for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing).

Timed Agenda: Please list a complete breakdown of the times allowed for each activity of the planned event.

Course Content: Please circle all that apply-do not replace the course content points with your own.

# Of CE Hours Requested: This question must be answered-how many hours of uninterrupted class time are attendees participating in?

Do you want this course listed on the Collaborative web site? If you select yes this indicates to the

Collaborative that your workshop/course is open to all social workers and that it is not an “in-service” or

“invite” only event.

Cultural Diversity and Social Justice: How will the presenter address cultural diversity and social justice as it relates to the topic of presentation?

Presenter Name and Credentials: Do not put “please see attached” in this field. Please answer the question.

Name and phone number of social worker involved in the planning: Please give the social worker’s full name as it appears on their social work license along with their credentials and their license number if available. You must include the credentials and it must be a licensed social worker!

In what way was the social worker involved in the planning of this presentation? We are looking for a detailed answer on how involved the social worker was with this presentation. Did they review content?

Securing the location and filling out paper work does not count.

Bibliography: Applications without this information will not be processed. You must list three published references that are relevant to the topic being presented. Do not use website addresses or Wikipedia. At least one of the references must be an article, paper, or book relative to the topic that has been published within the last five years. It does not have to be published by the presenter.

Continuing Education Rubric Table 1A

The following is the MINIMUM STANDARD for courses submitted to the Continuing Education Collaborative for review. You are welcome and encouraged to provide course work at a more advanced level than listed, but all courses must at least include information from one of the Content Areas AND the Required Information below. Courses that do not meet at least one of the standards will not qualify for social work continuing education.

WISDOM in methods of behavior modification and stress management without demonstration or assessment.

While there are emotional aspects for the client suffering from the pain of tissue damage, the topic of pain management does not apply to general practice of therapy related to problems of living or development, general relationship difficulties, etc. Pain management in social work relates directly to the physical and emotional consequences of pain. Must address Physical Pain.

 Course approvals are valid for 12 months.

 Courses repeated after that 12 month period must be resubmitted for review and approval. A new approval number will be issued if the program is re-approved.

 Approvals are issued on specific information based on course content, presenter qualifications and including, but not limited to, length of presentation.

 Any time a presentation changes in content, the presenter(s) or in the presentation length, you must resubmit the application for review and approval.

Course applications should be submitted at least 60 business days prior to your presentation date or your go-to-print date for your marketing materials. The sixty day guideline begins with the date the application is received. e.

Unlimited provider fees are paid and submitted with your first course application. There are no additional fees for subsequent applications during your one year unlimited status unless they are a
