Presenter: Andy Noonan,
Senior English Language Fellow in Kazan (Embassy of the USA,
Moscow)
Workshop: Teaching Culture (11.00 – 12.00)
In this interactive workshop, teachers will experience a culture lesson using a modern
American TV show, readily available on the internet, to explore the beliefs and
perspectives that underlie cultural phenomena as a vehicle to begin critical
discussions aimed at getting to the heart of culture. Two ready-to-use frameworks for
teaching culture will be utilized and discussed and teachers will have the opportunity
to brainstorm how these tools might be adapted for their own contexts.
Workshop: Collaborative Learning Projects (12.10-13.10)
The presenter will show examples of what his past students have been able to create
when working together with English as the medium of communication. From there,
teachers will discuss the difference between cooperation and collaboration, the
importance of introducing collaborative learning as well as the pitfalls in introducing
such an activity. Teachers will have a chance to brainstorm what challenges they
may face as well as what sort of projects their own students might enjoy doing, how
to manage and assess this type of learning.
