In 2008 Liebherr Refrigeration North America launched it’s ActiveGreen initiative, a
concept that best represents Liebherr’s commitment to finding greener ways to produce
quality products.
ActiveGreen is Liebherr’s corporate mission to achieve the highest ENERGY STAR®
rating, to set the example and encourage other North American manufacturers to be
RoHS compliant as Liebherr did in 2007, and to have the least damaging effect on the
environment through responsible manufacturing practices.
The chief component of ActiveGreen is to ensure that Liebherr’s entire product line of
refrigeration meets and exceeds the guidelines for ENERGY STAR®, making Liebherr
the only brand in the North American marketplace to achieve these standards.
The second key element of ActiveGreen is Liebherr’s RoHS compliance. RoHS stands
for the Restriction Of the use of certain Hazardous Substances in electrical and
electronic equipment, eliminating the use of major hazardous substances in the
production of Liebherr products such as lead, mercury, cadmium and certain types of
chrome and biphenyl. As of 2007, all Liebherr appliances in North America became
RoHS compliant making Liebherr the first refrigeration manufacturer to comply with this
practice worldwide.
Last, and most importantly, ActiveGreen ensures the continuation of Liebherr’s
longstanding history of responsible production initiatives, such as:






Liebherr was the first appliance manufacturer worldwide to remove CFC’s
completely from the production process in 1993;
Since 2000, Liebherr’s considerable investment to ensure environmental
compatibility has resulted in the reduced use of chemicals, solvents and energy
consumption;
Liebherr has established central waste and resource collection stations at their
manufacturing facilities;
Liebherr’s packaging materials on all products are 100% recyclable;
The water used in the production process is purified and pollution-free;
The energy released during production is recovered and utilized again in heating
the manufacturing environments.
In 2014, for a forth year in a row, Liebherr’s ActiveGreen initiative was once again
recognized when two units earned the coveted ENERGY STAR® Most Efficient
Designation. The new ENERGY STAR® Most Efficient is an initiative of the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE),
designed to raise the profile of the highest energy-efficient products in their categories
among those that have earned the ENERGY STAR® label. The Most Efficient
recognition continues ENERGY STAR’s work to provide the best energy-efficient
information for helping North American consumers reduce their utility bills and protect
the environment. The first two Liebherr refrigerators to qualify for the ENERGY
STAR® Most Efficient are the freestanding 30” combined refrigerator & freezer CS
1611 and CS 1660 refrigerators.
