It was nice to meet with so many of you at parent-teacher conferences. I learn a lot about and
from your children each day, and it was nice to have the opportunity to speak with you and hear
your input. Please feel free to contact me throughout the year if you have questions, comments, or
concerns. Let’s keep working together to make this a positive year of learning and growth for your
child!
We recently worked on 2-word poems in class. After reading The Polar Express, the students
generated their poems using words and ideas from the story. Make sure to ask your child about
this activity, and enjoy reading the poems when they are sent home later in the month.
In reading, we have been working on cause and effect relationships in fiction and nonfiction texts,
and we’ve been examining how specific aspects of a text’s illustrations contribute to what is
conveyed in a story. We’ve also been exploring nonfiction text features. Ask your child about our
nonfiction text feature scavenger hunt.
We’re continuing our work on measurement in math. The children have been measuring to the
nearest ¼ inch and nearest ½ inch and centimeter. We have been comparing different units of
measure and we will be working to find perimeter and area. Measuring to the nearest ¼ inch can be
tricky for students. Give it a try with your child at home. If your child has not mastered adding
and subtracting with basic facts or larger numbers, please practice at home. You can make up
problems yourself or you can create problems with dice and playing cards. You might even make a
game out of practice. If you would like to see some Everyday Math games, ask your child to bring
home his/her Student Reference Book. Here are some web sites with practice problems and
printable worksheets:

Where can you find a lot of information that you want to know about The Land of Lincoln? Your
child! We took a detour in social studies in November to study the Veteran’s Day and Thanksgiving,
and now we’re wrapping up our unit on Illinois with an Internet research project. The students are
very engaged in learning all about the state in which they live. We will be organizing our information
and using it to make brochures about our state. In science, the children are starting a research
project on the planets. Ask your child which planet he/she will be studying.
In the spirit of helping others, the Kolmar Student Council is sponsoring a winter clothing drive
for families in Worth Township. Students have been asked to bring in new hats, mittens, gloves,
scarves, coats, boots, and earmuffs in all sizes. Donated items will be placed on the Kolmar holiday
tree before being sent to families. Donations are being accepted through January 14. Thank you, in
advance, for your generosity.
