Nurse News: You hear a lot about the importance of vaccines to protect your children and community. There are many that are required for school attendance and there are some very important vaccines that are not required but will prevent a very serious and sometimes deadly infection and that one is Meningitis. This bacterial infection causes swelling of the covering of the brain and spinal cord. Severe disease can cause brain damage, loss of hearing or limbs, and death. Because adolescents are more likely to get meningococcal disease protection from the vaccine is important. It may act like flu-like symptoms of fever, headache, stiff neck and sometimes a rash. The 2 doses of vaccine are recommended for students age 11 with another booster at age 16. Talk to your child’s doctor and schedule them for a vaccine to protect their future health. Contact our local Skagit County Health Department at 360.336.9477 for more information. PTA SKATE NIGHT!
