Mapping Exercise: mapping of wider provision
This report sets out the leadership and management support provision across
Scotland that is provided out with Scottish Enterprise, Highlands and Islands
Enterprise and Skills Development Scotland, whose provision is summarised is a
separate report. This report presents a brief summary of the information provided by
the support organisations and therefore it only reflects the information they provided.
Please also note that this summary is not intended to be an exhaustive summary of
all the organisations providing leadership and management support, rather it is an
overview a selected number of prominent providers.
Provider
Summary of services
Institute of Directors
The Institute of Directors provides
leadership and management support
through
its
Scottish
Director
Development Centre. It provides an array
of services, courses, programmes and
qualifications to a variety of organisations
and individuals. Services are tailored to
improve the knowledge and skills
required for Board mebers and directors
in their strategic roles.
Support provided includes the Company
Direction Programme and Chartered
Director Award, the Msc in Company
Direction and Scottish Director Networks.
Services are available across Scotland to
members and non-members alike.
Scottish Chambers of Commerce
The Scottish Chambers of Commerce
provides
a
business
mentoring
programme, on behalf of Scottish
Enterprise and Highlands & Islands
Enterprise. It matches business need to
an appropriate mentor on a range of
leadership, strategy and individual
development for key decision makers.
Through their network of 22 chambers
throughout Scotland they also provide a
a diverse range of leadership and
management opportunities including VQs
in management; bespoke training in
management skills; Management Plus,
an executive development programme;
and accredited management training by
the CIPD. This programme is enhanced
through their Leadership Networking
Programmes with small groups sharing

best practice and ideas as to how to
grow their business and employee
development.
Scottish Council for Development and The SCDI seeks to encourage leadership
Industry (SCDI)
amongst its members through a series of
networking events highlighting specific
leadership topics and allowing senior
leaders to share their experiences.
Senior leaders from many sectors also
meet through SCDI to discuss leadership
issues. The SCDI seeks to raise
leadership as an important issue in
Scotland and acts as a forum for
discussion and networking to encourage
this.
Investors in People (IiP)
IiP provides a framework through which
organisations are encouraged and
supported to improve their performance.
Services include external assessment,
on line advice and packages of support.
Organisations who partake of the
framework show improvements in their
leadership and management both at an
individual and a collective level.
Open University
Open University provides specialist
routes in leadership and management
including the BA (Hons) Leadership and
Management; the Diploma in Higher
Education Leadership and Management;
Professional Certificate in Management;
and
a
Professional
Diploma
in
Management. Short CPD courses are
also provided as is e-learning and
bespoke development programmes.
Common Purpose
Common Purpose runs courses giving
participants the skills, connections and
inspiration to become better leaders at
work and in society in general. Courses
are neither classroom nor academically
based, instead focussing on sharing
learning from the successes and failures
of leaders from all sectors. Customised
courses are on offer as are CPD courses
and opportunities for school pupils.
Chartered Institute of Personnel and As the professional and development
Development (CIPD)
body for human resource (HR)
professionals, the CIPD seeks to develop
HR leadership and all levels within
organisations.
Leadership
and

management are key components of the
professional map used by CIPD meaning
that
leadership
and
management
qualifications
are
offered
to
all
professionals.
The CIPD has also engaged in research
in leadership and management to
determine its future in HR development.
Prince’s Scottish Youth Business Trust The PSYBT supports young people to
(PSYBT)
start up their own business by awarding
successful applicants the finance they
need to start-up. The aftercare
programme, that provides support for up
to 2 years after beneficiaries receive
funding, plays a key role in developing
good leadership and management
practices. This is delivered through a
mentoring system providing active hands
on support and encouragement to
establish business networks.
Chartered Management Institute (CMI)
As the only chartered professional body
dedicated
to
leadership
and
management, the CMI offers a wide
range of products and services from
practical management checklists to
tailored training and qualifications. An
example is ManagementDirect, an online
management and leadership resource
designed to support individuals in their
daily jobs.
Scotland’s Colleges
The
leadership
and
management
provision
delivered
by
Scotland’s
Colleges is diverse, both in terms of
content
and
delivery,
including
qualifications from
non-advanced to
postgraduate levels. There is significant
provision in functional business areas
such as Human Resources, finance and
marketing. Additionally, a great number
of vocational courses will incorporate
management skills development.
Scotland’s Universities
Scottish business schools are the main
University providers of leadership and
management development in Scotland.
The Royal Society of Edinburgh1 finds
that although provision is good at an
undergraduate level, it is lacking for more

senior managers. In terms of subjects,
the Scottish business schools were
identified as being relatively strong in
human resource management and health
management, but relatively weak in
strategy and management education.
Leadership provision was considered
weak overall although provision is strong
in one or two institutions.
Institute of Leadership and Management The ILM provides a wide selection of
(ILM)
flexible leadership and management
qualifications and specialist member
services. All of the qualifications provided
are based around workplace learning,
are designed in a flexible modular
approach and are available at award,
certificate and diploma level. ILM also
endorse the in-house support provision
of companies, if it meets a certain
standard.
Sector Skills Councils (SSCs)
Scottish
Council
Organisations (SCVO)
for
As summarised by the Alliance of Sector
Skills councils, a number of different
SSCs have introduced activities to
support employers to develop leadership
and management skills. Examples
include diagnostic questionnaires; year
long
programmes
comprised
of
workshops and mentoring; user guides
for
leadership
and
management
standards; and online learning materials.
Voluntary The SCVO has helped to develop a
number of leadership and management
related National Occupational Standards
for the voluntary sector. The SCVO also
delivers a short course programme on
management
and
organisational
development for all third sector
employers.
