THESIS TITLE : Modeling of Gas-Solid Non Catalytic Reactions
THESIS SUMMARY
The Research work is concerned with the experimental studies on high temperature gas-solid and solidsolid reactions (proceeding through gaseous intermediates). The reaction of this type involves coupling of
two gas-solid reactions in which one of them is the rate controlling reaction. Four different types of
reaction system was studied namely, Reduction of Barite, Reduction of Iron ore, (Hematite) by various
sources of Carbon and recovery of sulfur from pyrites in soluble forms. The effect of catalyst on these
reactions were also studied to collect the process parameters with emphasis on kinetics and reaction
modeling. The Barite reduction was carried out on large scale by an improved method, which has been
patented. Calcium cyanamide preparation was carried out at 5kg/batch capacity. Studies on gas solid
reactions involving structural changes were also carried out by using modern techniques such X-ray
diffractions, Thermogravimetry and Mercury Porosimetry etc. Using this system gasification of carbon
in carbon dioxide, decomposition reactions, carbon dioxide and Sulphur dioxide capture reactions with
CaO were also studied.

10. Important Achievements in this 2008-9:
(a) Development of Novel glass nanocomposites and Polymer nanocomposites as a lead free Xray absorbing material.
X-ray absorbing Materials for CRT TVs:
In last three decades there are many innovations in TVs and other display panels. The current
technology is based on CRT Process. In CRT technology, noticeable amount of lead is used in glass funnels
and panels for X-ray absorbing purpose and to shield the viewer from the radiations generated inside the
CRT. Off all the constituents in CRT glass, lead is of greatest concern from a human health and
environmental protection standpoint. Not only it is present in large amounts in CRT glass,-the neck and
funnel also contain up to 29 percent lead oxide by weight- it also is the only constituent found to leach
above federal toxicity Characteristic regularity level (5 ppm).
In medical, like Dentist, orthopedist and all x-ray tube manufacturers are using lead aprons. In
airports, radar systems and other places are also using gloves. These X-ray protections wears contains
lead and hence they are very heavy as well. Lead poisoning is a serious environmental health risk for all
humans. In view of this, the lead, mercury and cadmium have been banned world wide in all products
Under ROHS.
We have developed Lead Free X-ray absorbing materials for the first time. All CRT TVS and all medical
garments will be made up using these materials. Technology will be launched very soon.
( B) Development of Novel Conductive Ink for Flexible electronics
We developed conducting polymer based inks and made circuit patterns on simple transparency.
The highly efficient humidity sensors have been made using these flexible circuits . We have also
developed silver-conducting polymer nanocomposite ink for sensor applications.
