Radnor High School Course Syllabus Created 6/20/2013 Spanish 3 0563 Credits: 1 Weighted: College Prep Length: year Format: meets daily Grades: 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: Spa 2 (with a C or above) Overall Description of Course This course is appropriate for students preparing for college. It is a challenging intermediate level course in which students will expand their skills in the primary areas of modern language study: reading, writing, speaking and listening. The course proceeds primarily in Spanish and will involve daily review and daily practice at home. Students are expected to memorize and study the material presented in class including vocabulary, grammar and culture. Students will have daily written assignments and will be tested weekly or biweekly. In this course the focus of the culture is the history and civilization of Spain. The Annenberg video series Destinos is integrated into the curriculum and is supplemented by readings on Spanish history and culture. Students will be expected to give oral presentations on a variety of topics; engage in basic conversation, and write compositions on a variety of topics. Student Objectives: 1. Review present tense of regular, stem changing and irregular verbs while studying the geography of Spain. 2. Identify and describe ingredients in food preparation and follow recipes. 3. Give instructions and make recommendations using formal commands. 4. Order meals in a restaurant. Describe food and service. 5. Review past tenses (preterit/imperfect) of regular, verbs with spelling changes, stem changing and irregular verbs while studying the history of Spain. 6. Study the influence of the Moorish occupation on the history, culture, arts, architecture and cuisine of Spain. 7. Give instructions and make recommendations using familiar commands affirmative and negative. 8. Express hopes and wishes for the future using the present of regular and irregular subjunctive mood. 9. Talk and write about movies and their effect. 10. Talk and write about technology. 11. Discuss school related issues using impersonal expressions with subjunctive. 12. Identify and explain relationships. Compare personalities, attitudes and appearance. 13. Study the difference between the prepositions por/para. 14. Overview of the historical landmarks of Madrid. Introduction to the novel Don Quijote de la Mancha by Miguel de Cervantes. 15. Use the future tense to discuss environmental problems and solutions. 16. Introduce students to traditional flamenco music and the tunas, university student music groups. 17. Discuss the background of various famous Spanish artists and works of art.
