Division of Curriculum and Instruction, Charter College of Education California State University, Los Angeles Master of Arts Degree in Education: Option in Reading with a Reading and Language Arts Specialist Credential and/or a California Reading Certificate and/or a Postsecondary Reading Certificate Students can concurrently earn an M.A in Education: Option in Reading, and/or a Reading and Language Arts Specialist Credential, and/or a California Reading Certificate, and/or a Postsecondary Reading Certificate by taking the courses listed below.* The Reading and Language Arts Specialist Credential authorizes the holder to be a K-12 Reading Specialist at the school, district, or county level. The California Reading Certificate authorizes the holder to be a school site Reading Specialist at the grade levels authorized by his/her basic teaching credential. The CSULA Postsecondary Reading Certificate authorizes the holder to teach reading courses at the Community College level. Prerequisites Eligibility for admission to graduate study, including passing the CSULA Writing Proficiency Exam or equivalent (e.g., 41 or higher on the writing subtest of the CBEST). A 3.0 or higher grade point average in the last 90 quarter or 60 semester units attempted. A basic course in teaching reading and writing (EDEL 415 and EDEL 416, or EDSE 423, or equivalent, e.g. hold a basic teaching credential issued by California or any state). Teaching Credential or EDSE 423 or equivalent (for Postsecondary Reading Certificate). Corequisites for the California Reading Certificate and the Reading and Language Arts Specialist Credential EDEL 412, or equivalent (Reading Certificate only). ENGL 401, or TESL 400, or an equivalent course in linguistics by the end of the second quarter in the program. A California Multiple Subject or Single Subject teaching credential. 3 years of successful teaching experience at a grade level or levels authorized by your basic teaching credential after receiving your preliminary Multiple Subject or Single Subject credential or Education Specialist credential (or equivalent from another state).
