1. Dongguk University at Gyeongju
100 years of history, World Wide Dongguk
Founded in 1906, Dongguk University was one of the first institutions of higher education in
Korea. It has become a mammoth school which has campuses in Seoul, GyeongJu and Ilsan as
well as a campus in Los Angeles in the U.S.A. In addition, it has seven (7) secondary schools
and a preschool.
Dongguk University was founded according to the principles of Buddhist teachings to ensure
the highest levels of educational achievement and personal integrity, to bring the nation, human
society, and nature together by enlightening them with the companion spirits of wisdom and
charity, and to foster an open academic community in which each individual can inherit
confidence and respect as their academic reward.
Gyeongju : Where 1,000 years of history come alive
The Gyeongju campus is located in the world heritage listed city of Gyeongju, which was the
capital of the ancient Shilla dynasty, which ruled Korea for more than a thousand years, from 57
B.C to 935 A.D. Many monuments and artifacts of Shilla culture, such as Bulguksa temple and
Seokgulam grotto, dot the city. These unique sculptures and art objects make this city "an
outdoor tourist museum". In addition to historical monuments, Gyeongju also offers modern
accommodations, well-suited to both families and individuals, state-of-the-art facilities, and a
well-developed transportation system linking Gyeongju to the nearby big cities of Busan, Ulsan
and Pohang.
Gyeongju campus has 9 colleges, 45 departments, a medical hospital and a Chinese hospital
as well as a newly-built dormitory which can accommodate more than 1,500 students.
2. Korean Language Program (KLP)
The Korean Language Program(KLP) at Gyeongju campus focuses on intensive study of the
Korean Language. Courses in Korean culture are also offered as a supplement to Language
studies.
Students are placed in appropriate levels, ranging from one through six, using placement tests,
and progress evaluations are given each semester. Successful completion of level 4 guarantees
effective Korean communication in everyday situations. Students who have completed level 6
will be able to take college-level courses and are eligible for admission referrals to University
degree programs.
The college location in the historical city of Gyeongju offers students the opportunity to view
and take part in Korean cultural activities.
