SUBJECT:
Regional Tennis Tournaments
Schools that would like to enter the regional tennis tournament may access the LHSAA
website ( www.lhsaa.org) for information and entry blanks concerning the regional and
state tennis tournament . You should be receiving entries for the regional tournament in
the very near future.
On behalf of all LHSAA member schools and this office, I would like to express our
appreciation for your assistance in conducting the regional qualifying tournament.
As stated in the bulletin, all entries shall be mailed to you (certified), postmarked no later
than Monday, April 15, 2013. Upon receipt of entries, please check to make sure each
school entered in your regional meet is competing in the correct regional meet. All schools
and regions are listed in this bulletin. Each entry must be accompanied with a check made
payable to the LHSAA in the amount of $15.00 per person entered. These checks should
be forwarded to the LHSAA office with a complete report. The report will include entry
forms, envelopes showing postmark date, and results of the meet.
In all divisions girls and boys shall be allowed to enter one event.
Teams in all divisions shall be allowed to have two entries in each category:
No. l singles and No. 2 singles (Boys and Girls)
No. l doubles, No. 2 doubles, and No. 3 doubles (Boys and Girls)
See state bulletin and LHSAA Handbook for state qualifiers from regional matches. A
champion in each division must be decided so that they may be seeded in the state meet.
Please notify us of the total team points scored for boys and girls.

21.6.13
Regional team champions will send a maximum of five entries to the state
tournament. Regional team runners-up will send a minimum of four entries. A
team runner-up that does not qualify its minimum number of entries through
the qualifying criteria outlined in 21.6.12 will designate additional entries from
among its non-qualifiers at the discretion of the school’s head coach.
As a regional tournament director, perhaps the most important thing to understand is the
possibility that your region may send more entries to the state tournament than the
traditional draw size formula dictated in the past. For example: Let’s say the team champion
of your regional tournament qualifies its #1 singles, #2 singles and #1 doubles entries
through the traditional draw size criteria. That team will also get to send its #2 doubles team
to state, without impacting any of the doubles teams that already qualified. All possible
scenarios are outlined in the attached “Part B Worksheet” for regional tournament directors.
Of course, it is possible that a team may win a regional tournament without fielding a full
squad. For example: Let’s say that a school submits only two entries to the regional
tournament, both of whom are exceptional single players. Their point tally could indeed
merit a first or second place finish for their team. As the team did not enter any doubles
entries at the regional tournament, however, they will not be able to take advantage of the
new rule.

PART B WORKSHEET
Regional team champions will now qualify a maximum of five entries for the state tournament, while regional
team runners-up will qualify a minimum of four entries. In many cases, those schools will fulfill that
requirement in Part A. In some cases, those schools will be able to designate additional entries to state from
among their non-qualifiers in regional tournament play. Those additional entries, when necessary, do not count
against qualifiers from Part A. The following worksheet addresses all possible scenarios.

NOTE:
High school tennis coaches are allowed to coach their tennis players,
during regular season matches as well as regional and state tennis
tournaments. Coaching may be done on odd-game change overs and
when players split sets. Only the team coach and/or assistant coach
will be allowed to coach.
Each regional tournament director must contact the state director for their
respective division immediately following their tournament, preferably by fax or
email, and report the qualifiers so they can set up the state tournament.
Please supply all participants in each match with top quality tennis balls.
Please send all entry blanks and brackets of each division to me after your tournament. Also,
include total team points scored for boys and girls. Upon receipt of these brackets and entries,
the LHSAA will send a check to your school based on $6.00 per match played during your
tournament to cover your expenses.
Beginning with the 2000-01 school year, a school shall not allow a non-faculty
member to coach cross country, golf, gymnastics, soccer, swimming, tennis or
wrestling unless he/she has been properly certified or is scheduled for certification
through the LHSAA’s Coaches Education Certification Program. Temporary
certification shall be allowed by the commissioner on an emergency basis.
Please take the following steps at the conclusion of your regional tournament:
(l)
Mail all entry forms, envelopes showing the postmark date, and all school checks
from teams entered in your regional meet after your tournament to our office as
soon as possible.
(2)
Complete the enclosed Results Sheets for the Regional Tennis Tournament and
send it to our office along with the entry blanks, school checks and envelopes.
**** (3)
Contact immediately following your regional tournament, the state tournament
director, as listed on the LHSAA website and report your qualifiers in order for the
director to set up the state tournament. Mail a copy of your regional results
to the state director.
I will be waiting to receive the results and other information immediately following the
conclusion of your tournament. I am sure you will have additional questions between now and
meet time. Please call on me any time I can be of assistance.
