Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the university. The Schools of Medicine and Nursing are collaborating on the establishment of a simulation and clinical skills facility to enhance the educational experiences of students in both programs. Educational activities that take place in the simulation facility are critical components of the clinical skills curriculum for students and residents in the healthcare disciplines The facility supports two types of systems which are integrated: 1) specialized patient simulation equipment which emulates human body functionality; 2) system(s) which develop, practice, and test clinical patient care skills. The Coordinator of Simulation Education serves as the overall administrator of the collaborative simulation facilities for the Division of Health Sciences (DHS). The individual in this position works with faculty from the School of Medicine (UNSOM) and the Orvis School of Nursing (OSN) to ensure organized schedules, working equipment, and the technical support to meet the needs of both healthcare education programs. 2. Provide enough detail to enable a person outside the department to understand the job (percentage first with heading and then bulleted information). 50% - Administration of Human Patient Simulator and Clinical Assessment Systems Work with the administrative team (Associate Dean of Medical Education, the Director of Medical Simulation, Director of Orvis School of Nursing and the Coordinator of Nursing Simulation) to determine priorities and goals for the simulation education programs Provide oversight and assistance with the implementation of each unit’s educational needs as it relates to simulation activities Work with the Administrative team to assist in comprehensive strategic and operational planning efforts as it relates to simulation activities and the use of the simulation facilities Collaborate with faculty to support innovative research and facilitate the data collection 40% - Management of Human Patient Simulator and Clinical Assessment Systems Oversee optimal utilization of the simulation facilities in the Pennington Health Sciences Education building, including supervisory responsibility for the Simulation Technician position, as well as scheduling and coordination of all simulation activities Prepare annual budget for simulator activities and mid-year review Develop policies and procedures manual for simulation education activities Provide training, as needed, for UNSOM and OSN faculty and staff involved in simulation activities Provide expertise and assistance on matters concerning the application and utilization of all types of training patient simulators and clinical skills teaching and assessment systems Identify opportunities for improvement, innovation, implementation and integration of patient simulation technology into existing healthcare curricula. Validate the technical aspects of existing courses, scenarios, and initiatives to ensure effective application of patient simulation and clinical teaching and assessment technology to educational programs Participate in the development and recommendations for short and long-range goals for the simulation center to include a literature base on simulation and scenario digital library Facilitate planning of interprofessional activities with the Director of Medical and Coordinator of Nursing Simulation Education Position Description – Coordinator, Simulation Education (OME/NURS) Page 3 10% - External Relations Facilitate tours and orientations of the simulation facilities as needed to promote programs Promote the interests of the Schools of Medicine and Nursing through participation in public relations events, development of new markets for simulation use, community outreach programming and participation on campus committees and community organizations Identify opportunities for use of the simulation facilities for training (e.g. local fire departments, police, EMTs) as a means of providing financial support Identify funding opportunities and collaborate with administrators and faculty from both units on grant submissions 3. Level of Freedom: The person in this position is responsible for establishing the overall administration and day-to-day operations of all simulation education activities that take place for the Schools of Medicine and Nursing. The Coordinator’s actions and decisions made independently and collaboratively with the Simulation Administration team, and impact the potential success of the institutional efforts to educate healthcare providers who can work together in interprofessional teams. Impact: Outcomes and impacts are measured in the effective delivery of patient simulation and clinical teaching and assessment workflows using the prescribed equipment. Decisions and judgments of this position directly affect the educational process. Critical judgments and decisions in recruitment and training of standardized patients and in the implementation of scenarios/cases will also impact the educational outcomes of the learners. 4.
