Revival of traditions
The idea of the Vienna Chamber of Commerce and Industry to team well-established
Viennese companies with upcoming designers was successfully put into practice for the
fourth year in a row. The co-operations give much space for individual ideas and
interpretations. Departing from the specific history of the companies, tradition is gently
transferred into contemporary products. This year’s collection comprises six pieces; each
stands for a fresh interpretation of the “Wiener Werkstätte” tradition in its synergy of
craftsmanship and design. The WIEN PRODUCTS Collection was also displayed at the
opening of VIENNA DESIGN WEEK, Austria’s biggest design festival (Oct. 1-11, 2009).
WIEN PRODUCTS benefit from fresh design ideas
Once a year, the collection is realized by WIEN PRODUCTS companies, an umbrella brand
established in 1995 by the Vienna Chamber of Commerce and Industry. It exclusively
comprises manufacturers committed to high standards of quality, design, innovation, and
internationality. Up to now, 55 Viennese companies have been awarded the sought-after
membership; six of them took part in the WIEN PRODUCTS Collection 2009. The concept,
nationally and internationally acknowledged, reinforces the city’s reputation as the
traditional home of an upscale product culture.

Six convincing product presentations
The prestigious Viennese jewellery maker Schullin makes its debut in the WIEN
PRODUCTS Collection this year. The companies Backhausen, A. E. Köchert Jewellers,
J. & L. Lobmeyr, jewellery studio Skrein as well as Wiener Silber Manufactur already
supported the initiative in previous years. On the part of the designers, Sebastian
Menschhorn is again featured. Furthermore, Marco Dessí, the young designers’ duo
DANKLHAMPEL, Lisa Sonnberger and Florentina Reif-Gintl, Michael Embacher, and Lisa
Grabner make for fresh and innovative product design.
Decanter and tumbler “Grip”
Marco Dessí for J. & L. LOBMEYR
Marco Dessí, upcoming designer from South Tyrol, created a decanter
and tumbler for glass manufacturer J. & L. Lobmeyr. Around 1900, the
company co-operated with Adolf Loos and Josef Hoffmann. Therefore,
Dessí used a design by Adolf Loos from 1931 as a reference point,
incorporating an ornament at the base of both tumbler and decanter.
The objects are made of crystal glass, and are mouth blown.

Brooch “Ella” from the collection “My little darlings”
DANKLHAMPEL for A. E. Köchert Jewellers
Considerations concerning the personalization of jewellery objects
brought together the young designers team DANKLHAMPEL (Kathrina
Dankl and Lisa Elena Hampel) with the jeweller A. E. Köchert. The
brooch “Ella”, made of gold, corals, crystallized quartz, and onyx, is
the result. The designers: “To us, jewellery is a personal object,
something that evokes emotions and memories“. The work is a modern interpretation of
the traditional brooch.

Michael Embacher for Wiener Silber Manufactur
For the Wiener Silber Manufactur, designer and architect
Michael Embacher created a silver pendant with elements of leather,
representing the logo of the company: the four-leaf clover with hearts.
As an innovative but traditional brand, the Wiener Silber Manufactur –
currently undergoing a period of re-orientation – is about to revive the
Viennese silver tradition. On Novemver 19, 2009, the flagship store will re-open on
Spiegelgasse 14 in Vienna’s city centre.

“Chaos” collection – necklace, bracelet, and ring
Lisa Grabner for Schullin Wien
The “Chaos” collection by young designer Lisa Grabner is based on
Computer Aided Design. The jewellery manufacturer Schullin Wien
was presented with the challenge of finding new ways for the
manufacture of the set. What started as a deliberate “chaotic”
encounter of form and material, of aspirations and potentialities,
turned into fresh jewellery design of the highest quality: necklace, bracelet, and ring,
made from 18 karats yellow gold, are delicate masterpieces of very modern aesthetics.

Drapery “Fortuna” and “Prosper”
Sebastian Menschhorn for Backhausen Interior Textiles
The pomegranate motive belongs to the oldest textile designs. For
centuries, it has seen variations and changes – reasons enough for
Viennese graphic and product designer Sebastian Menschhorn to
reinterpret the theme for Backhausen, reducing the pomegranates
and the infolding twines to its essence. Due to their timeless quality,
the textiles can be used for modern furniture as well as for antiques. “Fortuna” and
“Prosper” are the first eco-friendly produced and recyclable flame retarding Trevira CS
textiles, following the Cradle-to-Cradle principle.

Hair jewellery “Freedom of the bird”
Lisa Sonnberger and Florentina Reif-Gintl for Skrein* Schmuckwerkstatt
“Freedom of the bird” is the name of the elegant and delicate hair
accessory, which two young alumnae of the Viennese goldsmith
academy, Lisa Sonnberger and Florentina Reif-Gintl, designed for
Skrein* Schmuckwerkstatt. Precisely because of the application of
traditional techniques and materials, the hair-band appears extremely
modern and fresh. It is supposed to evoke a feeling of wearing an unique item.
Alexander Skrein refers to his company’s credo that convincing jewellery must never be a
commodity. The renowned manufacturer stands for the highest quality when it comes to
realizing individual ideas.
