README File for the estimates of fixed reproducible tangible wealth in the Unites States, 1925-97 (README.DOC). This CD-ROM contains estimates that will be published in FIXED REPRODUCIBLE TANGIBLE WEALTH IN THE UNITED STATES, 1925-94 (forthcoming) and unpublished detailed estimates by industry and by type of equipment or structure. NOTE: The Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) does not publish these detailed estimates in the SURVEY OF CURRENT BUSINESS or in the FIXED REPRODUCIBLE TANGIBLE WEALTH IN THE UNITED STATES volume because they are less reliable than the higher level aggregates in which they are included. Compared to these aggregates, the more detailed estimates are more likely to be based on judgmental trends, on trends in the higher level aggregate, or on less reliable source data. METHODOLOGY: The CD-ROM contains several files providing information about the methodology used to prepare the tangible wealth estimates. Introductory and definitional information is provided in the text file INTRO.DOC; the article, "Improved Estimates of Fixed Reproducible Tangible Wealth, 1929-95," by Arnold J. Katz and Shelby W. Herman (SURVEY OF CURRENT BUSINESS, May 1997, pp. 69-92) describes the new methodology used to prepare the estimates; and another article, "The Measurement of Depreciation in the U.S. National Income and Product Accounts," by Barbara M. Fraumeni (SURVEY OF CURRENT BUSINESS, July 1997, pp. 7-23) describes the theoretical and empirical literature that supports the BEA methodology. Both of these articles are included on this CDROM and may be accessed via the Adobe Acrobat Reader. Two spreadsheet files provide the following additional methodological information: (1) source data used to prepare the industry stock estimates, and (2) the depreciation schedule for autos, computers, and computer peripherals. ACROBAT3.EXE and XLVIEWER.EXE are executable files for installing Adobe Acrobat Reader version 3.01 and Excel Viewer 97. README.DOC is this documentation file. OUTLINE.DOC is an ASCII text file that contains table outlines for each of the data files described below. ACROBAT.DOC is an ASCII text file containing additional information about the Adobe Acrobat Reader. XLVIEWER.DOC is an ASCII text file containing additional information about Excel Viewer 97. INTRO.DOC is an ASCII text file containing introductory and definitional information about the tangible wealth estimates. ERRATA.DOC is an ASCII text file describing series with corrected estimates in years prior to 1995. The PDF directory contains two .PDF format files. ARTICLE1.PDF contains the article "Improved Estimates of Fixed Reproducible Tangible Wealth, 192995," by Arnold J. Katz and Shelby W. Herman. ARTICLE2.PDF contains the article "The Measurement of Depreciation in the U.S. National Income and Product Accounts," by Barbara M. Fraumeni. The XLS directory contains 46 spreadsheets in .XLS format. TABLEA.XLS contains a table showing the source data that underlie the capital stock estimates. TABLEB.XLS contains tables showing depreciation schedules for autos, computers, and computer peripherals. The remaining 44 files contain capital stock, depreciation, and average age estimates.
