Get back to your roots and ‘Grow your Own’
“Despite the slowly recovering economy more and more people are still turning to
‘growing their own’.” says one of Britain’s most popular multichannel retailers, Scotts of
Stow - who sell everything for the kitchen, home and garden. “In fact, so much so, that
we’re seeing such an upturn in sales of these types of products in comparison to previous
years that we’ve dedicated four pages of our new Summer catalogue entirely to ‘grow your
own’.”
So why this revitalised interest in growing your own fruit and vegetables? Perhaps the
average savings per week are the attraction? Perhaps it’s the increasing fascination in
living environmentally-friendly lifestyles and reducing our carbon footprint? It’s certainly
the ‘green way’ to eat – and by shopping from home you’re also cutting your carbon
footprint drastically.*
(*Research Study by the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Heriot Watt University, July 2009, showing that a typical
van-based home delivery produces less than 5% of the CO2 generated by an average trip to the shops by car and less than
15% of the CO2 released if a shopper takes the bus.)
So how can you get started?
The most important thing when starting a ‘grow your own’ patch is to decide:
1) What to Grow and 2) Where to Grow It. This will depend on the size of your garden –
however, whatever the size Scotts of Stow recommend you start small and expand your
growing area as your become more experienced.
If you don’t have a greenhouse then consider using a compact polytunnel – the ideal lowcost mini greenhouse! Scotts of Stow’s CultiCave, at just £59.95 ( or £99.90 for two)
represents great value for money. It either erects freestanding or can be leant against a wall
or fence - you can even remove one of the doors and simply zip on a second, third or fourth
CultiCave to build a tunnel that’s as big as you want. Tall enough for tomatoes or big
plants, it’s the perfect start to a new ‘grow your own’ garden venture.

Growing seeds in pots or tubs is also a good way to start.
Alternatively, use a Growbag in conjunction with
Growpots – what are often referred to as ‘the tomato
grower’s secret weapon’ and enjoy a significantly
increased yield from your Growbag. These cleverlydesigned pots sit in the Growbag to create an efficient
irrigation system that delivers a ready supply of water to
the roots. As a result, you don’t have to water every day,
there’s no compost erosion or drying out, and your
tomatoes are fed easily and accurately. Also available
are mini Growpots, ideal for strawberries and or herbs.

Another ingenious solution you’ll find in the Scotts of Stow treasure trove - helping you
move towards self-sufficiency, is the raised planter. Designed for the smaller garden that
doesn’t have the room for a full-size vegetable bed, this planter base is big enough to grow
really worthwhile crops of vegetables, salad leaves and herbs. It comes with an optional
metal frame and a choice of two covers – choose the pest-resistant micromesh cover if you
want rain and fresh air to pass through, and good protection from strong, direct sun. Or
alternatively the polythene cover retains more warmth and humidity to encourage quicker
growth, as well as protecting plants against harsh weather.

Cover) £69.85 (save £5)
You certainly don’t need a large garden or allotment to start growing some of your own
produce, in fact you’ll be amazed at how much you can grow on a patio and also how easy
it is. Some things, like corn, or pumpkins, require a lot of space, but peas, carrots and
tomatoes would be great. If you own a flat and only have a small balcony you can still
grow lots of your own vegetables in pots, tubs or Growbag solutions. Remember – your
fruit and vegetable garden can be built up over the years as you become more comfortable
growing your own produce. And excess product can be donated to neighbours or sold to
local fruit and vegetable stalls!
So if you’re thinking of getting started or expanding, Scotts of Stow can help with their
extensive range of garden and outdoors products. When it’s time to put up your feet and
enjoy leisurely days in the garden you’ll find an array of outdoor furniture and decorative
items – all excellent value and quality.
